They’ll feel better about themselves for having done it without handouts and so will their descendants.

I suppose you must have skipped the good samaritan parable in bible class huh...it's funny when you hear conservatives talk about "old fashioned values" but what they really mean is olden day prejudice. There were very good people across the historical eras who welcomed the downtrodden into their lands/homes and didn't care what their skin colour, religion or cultural background.

Good Samaritanism is meant to be an act of compassion: finding someone beaten on the side of the road, helping or getting them help. It's not meant to be a lifetime commitment. By all means, help someone. I give the homeless guy money, when I have it to spare. But we don't have a set up where he meets me every Friday for his weekly donation.

Also Ephesians 4:28, says: "If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good hard work, and then give generously to others in need."

Stealing in this case refers to mooching.

The right has always regarded poor people in need to be thieves if they take public help.

Taking public assistance to which you are legally entitled is not theft. And you know that.

Being disabled or elderly is legal entitlement. Qualifying for public assistance because you've had 6 kids, by 6 different men, none of which you've named on the birth certificates, so that the government can't go after them when you sign up for welfare, is theft.

As those six children need to eat and have a roof over their heads, and need a healthy mother to take care of them, then they are legitimately in need. Ergo, it's not theft.

You seem to crank out default replies like a robot. It says in the latter part of the verse to give generously to those in need. Most churches consisting of the right that I know of have homeless and needy programs. They actually do something more than just pontificate about it.

When I hear a group/organization/party constantly praising themselves and proclaiming their virtue over others, that tends to sound false and artificial.

So, intentionally lying to the government about knowing who the baby's father is qualifies as need? You're for fraud? Nice...

It seems more like the unwillingness to admit that fraud exists. I am noticing whenever intentional fraud is talked about, the response from some is to bring up those whom fraud does not apply to as a counter argument. Which of course is deflecting. Plus the insinuation that those who argue with them are too heartless to understand the difference between to the truly needy and those playing the system, are are supposedly lumping everyone together.

The majority of people on public assistance aren't guilty of defrauding or mooching off of anyone. But you wouldn't know it from listening to the right.

Yes, plenty of churches - conservative or liberal - help the needy. I'm all for that... as long as the church in question is sane The problem with the religious right is that they are extremely selective about who they help. Gays and Trans people are usually excluded. I one saw a documentary on the Southern Baptists who expected homeless people to sit and listen to a sermon before they could eat. Homeless people were having born again experiences and getting re-baptized just so they could eat. As I'm a Lutheran, and don't even believe in that born again experience sh*t, I guess I'd be left to starve.

The welfare mother scam is probably impossible to get around since children are being used that way. But it goes to show the lenths people will go to to get a free ride. Maybe after the kids are grown the parent(s) should be required to start paying the money back.

Mark 10:13-16
13 People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. 15 Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them.

I supposes America's founding fathers found a way to say all men are created equal but then maintained slavery for another 150 years.

ANy wonder christians can say they believe in the literal translation of the bible "the meek shall inherit the earth" but then continue to commit heresy on the innocent and weak.

Never have high expectations for human beings
