They were executed for espionage against the United States. Allegedly, they passed atomic secrets to the Soviet Union.

There is a strong movement to get Ethel Rosenberg exonerated.

I heard the evidence against them was pretty solid.

Not that it mattered too much. The Soviets had top nuclear scientists and primitive atomic bombs really aren't that hard to make. A group of graduate students in nuclear physics could make one given the materials and facilities.

Not back in the 1940s, we put years and billions into figuring out how to do it, and the Soviets were able to just copy our homework over our shoulder, shaving years off of their own nuclear weapons program. The Rosenbergs were guilty as sin, and they weren't the only ones, we were very naive back then regarding counterintelligence, and there were a a lot of foolish intellectuals who thought communism seemed so great on paper and were willing to act as ideological agents for the Soviets. Most of that dried up in the post war period when the truth about Stalin and the USSR became more widely established, but a few true believers soldiered on, like the Cambridge 5 in the UK.

I remember this day, but is it actually leading anywhere? Most participants do not seem to have been arrested.

It's also a bit funny that the US is freaking out of this given all the democratically elected leaders they've disposed over the decades just because they didn't like their policies. Remember Allende, anyone?

Several who actually entered the capitol have been arrested, tried, and convicted. Now the Justice Department is going after the Trump crew who masterminded the riot that day.

Eh, I think that's debatable, we mostly just looked the other way on that one while Pinochet did his thing, and Allende actually shot himself, with a VZ61 machine pistol given to him by Fidel Castro no less. Now if you want to talk Iran or Guatemala, there's no debate there at all, we straight up did them dirty with smoke and mirrors fake coups, technically brilliant operations with horrific long term effects.

Seems "patriotism" is an abused word among republicans. They have made it toxic.

The PowerPoint. The text messages. More text messages. Etc.

Hopefully all of this turns into the type of charges, and conviction, that make the orange guy ineligible to run for public office ever again. 8)

I believe that those who entered the capitol were mostly cannon fodder for an agenda we're still trying to get a grasp of. Their sentences recognize that; small fish, small sentences.

I don't find it funny; I find it frightening. We had no business interfering with other countries and power players in our country have no business trying to interfere with our democratic process. The track record with such actions, and how it turns out for the countries involved, is horrific.

While we're still trying to get a grasp of exactly what happened on January 6th and what the real, underlying plan was, it seems like some big power players wanted to wrestle the process out of the hands of voters who didn't vote the way they had wanted them to, and into their own hands.

I've been intrigued (and appalled) by one idea that has been floated, which I do sincerely hope is false: Trump may have been hoping counter-protest action by anti-fa would give him an excuse to impose martial law. It would explain many of the deep, structural changes to the defense department he had been making in the waning months of his presidency.

Yes (although I do hate coming to the point of thinking that), but the forces that created his power won't die with him, and someone else will step into that void.

Yaaa.. the whole “republicans can’t win so may ask well steal power and put an end to democracy,” thing is kinda bad..
