We have the right to talk about WHATEVER we want as long as it doesn't go against site rules. Behind the scenes of the games is important to talk about, especially when plenty of it makes news every Olympics! I suggest you keep your personal attacks to yourself next time. They are rude and not needed.

Anyway, an IOC official was apparently arrested for scalping Olympics tickets recently:

Perhaps its a misunderstanding, we shall see. I doubt its some mistake. IOC is corrupt and needs to be changed a lot.

@empathy: i don't even know what you're talking about or trying to say. brazil is not a poor country. it's a disorganized country, with very corrupt politics, where the typical way of doing business with the government involves money disappearing and never being seen by the average citizen. and rio is a city, thousands of miles away from the amazon

Not that I wish to get dragged into these debates, I'll gladly point out any misunderstandings or corrections
of my view incurred in this thread.

If someone wants to point out something that I've said that is 'deliberately offensive', feel free to jot it all out.

For any other sensible members I'll state what I know, and whilst I'm no Amazonian woman, I do know that whilst some took part in the opening ceremony, others would rather see the backs of those deforesters'.

Seeing as I don't want to be told I'm cramp posting again, then maybe I'll stick to my own vibe on another thread.

This is what was donated to the Rio fund and the U.K are sponsoring the Paralympic games with our lottery fund.

The story about those US swimmers who claimed to be robbed is becoming pretty weird. The story from the Brazilian side emerging is that one or more of the swimmers committed vandalism at a gas station rest room and that the station security guards forced them to pay for the damages at gunpoint. So it would be robbery of sorts, but the vandalism part was left out of the swimmers story. There supposedly is CCTV footage of the damage and a swimmer fighting with a attendent. We'll see. Interesting that no one involved, swimmers or station called police. It is all media exposure.

From what I know- Rio promised to treat the water much better than they did. If I remember the news story right- 8 treatment plants were supposed to be built, only one was. Most of the water is supposed to be treated- only about half is!

Then there is the crime that has been reported.

I'm sure at the time of picking Rio as the Olympics city.. they thought it was a good idea. However when the city is in this bad of shape, more should've been done or they cancel the Olympics. I realize cancelling it is pretty harsh- but people's health and safety are more important than sports, period.

Then there's the tv coverage of the Olympics that is crap (in USA at least, not sure if its this bad everywhere)- broadcasts on NBC are on tape delay, they have filler stuff between events, don't always show the full event, etc. So stupid.

Last but not least- Hope Solo is a sore loser and needs to grow up.

Perhaps Rio made promises it couldn't keep...with what resources and funding were they going to build 8 water treatment plants in time for the olympics? I get the impression it's kind of an impoverished area.

Oh and the lastest of olympics stuff from the BBC showing up on my facebook.

Apparently the world is utterly outraged that a couple German sisters who got 81st and 82nd place in a running marathon held hands crossing the finish line. I mean really?

Well, it also gave her the chance to reject him in just about the most publicly humiliating way possible :D

On the other hand, had she rejected him, I think millions of fans would hate her and she’d be in permanent danger of being killed or raped by them, so there probably was quite a lot of pressure indeed.

Well I suppose I figure if she was going to reject him it would have been before they'd been a couple for 6 years, so I am just not seeing that she was pressured against her will to say yes.

What kind of an idiot would vandalize a bathroom?

Sheer idiocy!

I mean...they're representing their country. They've won medals

It's just sheer stupidity, all around.

They would love to see the inside of a Brazilian jail..

i still think that the choice of location for the olympics this year was a bad idea and probably fishy, and that the repercussions overall won't be good (for most everybody involved, except maybe contractors and such), but to be honest it seems like it's turning out to be not nearly as bad as i expected. more like a collection of minor miscellaneous wtf moments (related and unrelated to the organization of the event itself) than any kind of generalized disaster

one thing i have to say i find confusing is the whole zika paranoia. isn't it only dangerous for pregnant women? there are plenty of other actual concerns (violence, pollution, etc) but most everybody seems to zero in on that one. it sounds almost like tinfoil hat gone mainstream

If it was not so dangourous I would let swimmers have thier hometown parades. But instead of of American flags and thier medals I would have floats with posters from the film "The Ugly American".

Zika is most dangerous for pregnant women but is not totally benign for all others. It has been connected with other complications and conditions and in some cases caused death, but the studies are in too early a phase for definative statements.
