Again with the vegetarian bashing eh? What's wrong with being a vegetarian? I always make sure I know where my goats cheese is from because I do worry about how the goats are treated. In the place I get my cheese from, they are treated very well. But still, I digress... PETA are stupid...
There is nothing wrong with being a vegetarian. A properly constructed veggie diet is healthy and nourishing. HOWEVER, there is a great deal wrong with pretending animals (other than humans) have rights. They don't. Rights is a human concept for human beings. It does not apply to less intelligent species on this planet.
Also PETA condoned terrorist and criminal acts an laboratories that conducted proper and necessary medical research, where they used animal subjects to test various treatments and drugs. If we have to sacrifice animals or eat their flesh for our nourishment so be it.

That's a simplistic overview. If what you're saying about the less intelligent species on the planet not having rights were true, you and I would have the moral right to kill and eat anyone whose IQs are lower than ours.
Absolutely no one is born with rights, regardless of which species they originate from. Rights have to be fought for. That sucks, but it's a fact of life. There are plenty of countries in which human beings are treated the same way we treat animals, and the same arguments you're using are used as justification for human rights abuses there.
This same worldview was al;so used as justification for keeping slaves 200 years ago, and still is in some parts of the world.
Regarding medical research, the arguments anti-vivesctionist organisations like BUAV are not based on condemnation of vital medical research. They're based on the fact that 90 per cent of animal testing is of no practical use to human beings whatsoever. It's all funded by drug companies whose only concern is making money.
That's why there are approximately 600 different painkillers on the market - the majority of which are from the same drug grouping as aspirin and paracetamol - which don't vary at all from their blueprints. That's also why there aren't cures for cancer or AIDS yet - currently, not enough people suffer from these conditions to make effective antidotes profitable, and there's no reason to believe for a minute that pharmaceutical companies have any interest in anything other than profit.
