I would like to respectfully ask that IndispensiblePG kindly retract that last comment. I just happen to be a college student, and while I agree that his stereotype fits most at university level, it does not fit me and as such I find it highly offensive.
The whole point of being a student, specifically a college student, is to learn how to think for oneself. One of my professors whom I highly respected told me this. Most students don't get that point, and I can see where he is coming from in his comments. However, being stereotpyical is not a flattering trait. For me personally its the root of all evil.
I'm sure I've already given my opinions on this matter. While the police do have a mandate to protect public safety, they are also bound to enforce laws protecting freedom of speech. Protesting, when done correctly, allows for both freedom of speech and public safety. Obviously the need for public safety outweighs the right to free speech, but that is only when the latter endangers the former.
It is unfortunate, then, that in the minds of most enforcers, that protest = violence, and they tend to act on this stereotype rather than ascertaining the situation for themselves. Of course, there have been plenty of protests that have erupted into violence in history, which is why said stereotype exists. This is an extreme example of stereotypes perpetuated by law enforcement.
