You don't understand. That is the opposite of net neutrality.

The big internet providers (like Comcast, Verizon, AT&T, etc) want to be able to price-discriminate for access to bandwidth. Websites would have to pay a fee to ensure that their sites would be accessible, or else the customer would have to pay specific fees to get decent access to specific sites. The price discrimination is the real problem here, and it's the same thing we saw with 19th-century robber barons and their railroad monopolies. If Comcast were to take a financial interest in Google, they could deliberately slow down access to Yahoo and Bing. If they had an interest in Twitter, they might block or slow down Facebook. If they like Hulu, perhaps they block Netflix. If they like a Democratic candidate, perhaps they block sites with favorable coverage of the Republican candidate. They would crush freedom and competition on the web.

@ Orwell

For someone whom apparently has read 1984, you sure seem to have an irrational trust of the government.

It is because I believe there are specific limits that can and should be applied to government activity without resorting to anarchism. I mean, you do realize that Eric Arthur Blair was a socialist, right? I am way to the right of the author of 1984.

Doesn't George Orwell have socialistic views? I haven't read 1984 or any of his books and neither do I know that much about the dude himself, but warning about the pitfalls of the government isn't the same thing as having absolutely no faith in it.

Would you trust Government with controlling one of the few sources of media that will criticize said Government when it does something it isn't supposed to? I don't, it is too much power for the Government to have.

You really do hop about almost randomly, don't you?

Anyways, Net Neutrality is not about the government controlling the internet. It is about ensuring that everyone has access to the Internet on equal terms- that is, people cannot be silenced or priced out of existence if ISPs don't like them.

Maybe we should be going after these state sanctioned cable/telephone/ISP monopolies instead of giving the the government even more power to interfere in the market and further stifle competition for the benefit of their corporate friends rather than the stated purpose of protecting consumers.

Where did that come from? George Orwell might've wrote a book about the pitfalls of government but that doesn't mean he had no faith in it at all. And hell no I don't trust the Government trying to get away with as much attempts to expand themselves as possible.

I'm making a point about government going amok because it has too much power. The book 1984 shows how Government can become tyrannical.

What an asinine interpretation. Orwell was a Socialist, and I don't mean what you refer to as "socialist"- he was a legit Democratic Socialist. 1984 is not some kind of right-wing limited government screed.

Yes but I'm also making the point that him pointing out how the Government can be tyrannical doesn't mean his idea of a slippery slope is the same. What right wingers might see as a vital source of leverage to the Government when it comes to public health care for example might be seen by him as a system that has enough checks and balances to prevent itself from going down that road.

Orwell was a socialist dammit! A far-left radical! He wanted a much bigger and more powerful government than exists in any modern Western country.

1984 is not about the dangers of "big government," and anyone who tells you otherwise is either a liar or a moron.

When did I say Orwell wasn't a socialist? All I know about 1984 is that it was about government surveillance (or something to do with the government) and how semantics can be used to manipulate people. I dunno, I haven't read any of his books and don't know too much about the man himself.

Really don't care if George Orwell was advocating bigger and more powerful government, his book showed why we should be against bigger and more powerful government.

I don't much care for the idea of my T.V. watching me either. For this reason I will never buy Xbox 360 Kinect 8)
