The District Judge must have been in a bad mood. He's been jailed for six weeks!

So he is jailed for being a PITA at an important event??

No. He was jailed for common assault and and causing harassment, alarm or distress.

The importance of the event is an aggravating factor, as is Mr Murdoch's age.

I was expecting a community penalty and it may well be reduced to that on appeal. A first offence of common assault wouldn't usually result in custody, the public order offence is minimal compared with the drunks on a Friday night and he's been dealt with far more severely than previous protesters who have disrupted Parliament.
