Not totally closed to the notioin of telepathy, but saying that this parable of the firemen is evidence for it is nonsense.

Its shows that genetics can trump environment- a bue collar orphaned child wired to be a warrior will still become a warrior (drawn to physical acton) even if he is raised by a doctor married to a CPA. Ditto for a pair of twins raised seperatedly by white collar parents.

Obviously there is no gene for "being a firemen" but you gravitate to your profession because of how you're genetically wired - and no one's vocationall options are infinite. If you excell at physical action and are confident around physical danger etc there are only a limited number of non-criminal professions out there for you ( or for anyone of us with any set of traits for that matter). There are a lot more job openings for city firemen than there are for green berets

the fact that they both rebelled against thier parents is to be expected (they were of diffent genetic stock than their parents - and kids rebel against their natural parents all of the time) and the fact that they both became Fireman is more like one in four than "one in a billion" (being a cop would be a similiar line of work- that one or both mightve gravitated to- Ill grant you that). So you might expect one cop/one fireman, or both cops, or both fireman. The latter being one in four for the possible outcomes for a pair of twins wired to be action heroes.

So the incredible coincidence of them both being firemen is not really much of coincidence nor is it so incredible in non paranormal terms.

So your fable is interesting for what it has to say about nature vs nurture but it doesnt come within an astromical unit of being evidence for telepathy.

Also: nobody on this thread seems to have noticed the tact that the army is calling it SYNTHETIC telepathy. The term is obvious poetic license for using technology to transmit thoughts through wireless devices in a way that would outwardly look like "real" telepathy (which may or may not be a oxymoron). Theyre not persuing psychic power.

Those who believe in the "paranormal" seem to lack faith in coincidences.

I have noted that it is not "real" telepathy, but actually another application of ordinary radio.

The evidence that anamalous cognition is possible and can be demonstrated, is compelling depending on which group of scientists one listens to. I doubt we will see any direct evidence of the forces that work together that are behind the phenomenon, at least not in my lifetime.

The independent group of scientists that reviewed the research of the military project stargate in 1995 had faith that a scientific explanation of the forces that underly anamalous cognition would be understood in ten years. We are still patiently waiting. No serious effort that I know of has been initiated to research an explanation of why anamalous cognition can be scientifically demonstrated.

Scientists are still working hard to demonstrate the phenomenon, 16 years after independent scientific review concluded that it could be reliably demonstrated using the scientific method.

Even if you predisposed toward a physically orientated vocation, there are 10,000 different occupations you can pick from, so it's still a coincidence. The second confound is the parental influence.



Still requires brain waves to be translated. If it's only wireless communication then surely they just use a 2-way or mobile phone or satellite phone. Messages intercepted still need to be decoded and movement on the ground is too fast for the enemy to bother with code breaking.

According to Hood it's easy to demonstrate how easily people are distracted, we have less control over our own decisions and perceptions than we like to imagine.

The rest is filled in, as the brain creates a stable environment."

Therefore perception is merely a projection, the brain maps reality based on the limited data we receive. The confidence skeptics have is thus premature.

This means that the techniques being used are faulty. A proper mode of observation or experiment should give uniform results.

A proper experimental method would yield repeatable consistent null results - that is, no results that could not be explained by mere random chance.

According to the scientists that reviewed 20 years of research on the phenomenon in project Star Gate anamalous cognition has been reliably demonstrated and as stated by the review scientists the demonstrations of the phenomenon cannot be explained by mere random chance.

Fnord was kind enough to present the evidence that apparently he thought disproved the phenomenon in the quote he provided of the executive summary of the independent scientific review of the 20 year Stargate program, that stated that remote viewing was no longer warranted as an accurate way to gain actionable intelligence and recommended the program was no longer warranted.

What he didn't present as a quote was the conclusions of the same report that clearly stated
that they found the research from project stargate to reliably demonstrate the phenomenon of anamalous cognition. The scientists recommended further research to investigate what causes anamalous cognition; that is the part we still don't understand.

Part of their report suggested that this phenomenon is stronger among some individuals than others as evidenced in the research.

The latest research by Bem suggests that the level of stimulation provided by the objects in the research, plays a role in how well the people in the study evidence psi results beyond what can be expected by random occurrence.

The only attempt so far in replicating the effort is one being done online with words that have not provided a replication of the results, however they admit that there is no objective way to determine if the respondents, were focused on the test, other than self report, that they didn't check their email or break to go to the bathroom.

That test is available online if you want to find out how you perform on their test of anamalous precognition.

Much of the scientific research into psi, has used unemotional stimuli and random subjects.

While the research of Bem uses random subjects, it does provide emotional stimuli as an element of study. The research in project stargate was unique in that the participants were screened and understood to already self report a serious ability for anamalous cognition, and the objects in the study were of a highly stimulating nature, unlike random numbers and symbols and random subjects used in other scientific studies.

The only way to replicate the conditions in project stargate for further study of anamalous cognition would be another project stargate, with the unique ability to screen individuals that state they have the ability, and to provide serious psychologically meaningful elements to the study. 20 years of research of reliably demonstrated results of anamalous cognition researched by government and verified by independent review is compelling.

Some of the research with random subjects and random objects of study with no emotional elements have not provided the same results.

The Bem study is closer to the research done in project Stargate, in that environmental stimuli is provided as part of the study. As in project stargate, this seems to be at least one of the elements of study that is necessary for a reliable demonstration of anamalous cognition.

It has been suggested that the subjects that yielded more positive results of psi be segregated in future replications of the experiment done by Bem, to study the ability as one that varies stronger among random individuals.

Bem has been a highly respected research scientist in the field of psychological research for 50 years. This research has been accepted through peer review. We are awaiting replication of effort and my understanding is it is underway with a number of researchers.

While we don't yet have replication of the eight year effort of Bem, the replication of effort in project stargate has already been researched and reviewed as a reliable demonstration of anamalous cognition, both by the government and independent review of 20 years of research. It doesn't get much more compelling than that.

The link and quoted conclusions of the independent review of project stargate are provided on the first page of this thread. It is clear that the method of research used in project stargate provided uniform results of a reliable demonstration of anamalous cognition beyond what could be expected by random chance.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but you already provided this evidence in your link to the independent scientific review that you lauded for project stargate on the first page of this thread.

While you provided the executive summary at the beginning of the report that indicated that remote viewing was not accurate enough for actionable intelligence and the program was no longer warranted, the study and conclusion of the study clearly stated that anamalous cognition was possible, had been reliably demonstrated by the research done in project stargate, and could not be explained by random chance.

The author of the independent review also recommended that resources should be allocated to further study an explanation of the reliably demonstrated phenomenon of anamalous cognition.

20 years of government research and a verification of the research methods by independent review that anamalous cognition can be reliably demonstrated, is compelling evidence as agreed upon by the researchers that did the original research, and the independent review of that research.

No one has refuted this evidence to date. We haven't had another project stargate that could repeat the elements of the study that included individuals that were screened and understood to have a higher than normal ability for anamlous cognition along with the highly charged emotional nature of subjects of study related to anamalous cognition.

Bem's study approximates the aspect of emotionally charged objects of study in project stargate. The participants of the eight year study were randomly chosen unlike project stargate; the study has been extensively peer reviewed and accepted as good science. And it is agreed upon by those that reviewed the study that the phenomenon of precognition demonstrated could not be explained by mere random chance.

That is so cool! Just imagine if there were devices that allowed people to communicate just by thinking. In a way it would be scary if everyone could read your mind, then they would know all the terrible things you are thinking, as well as the good. The implant would need an on/off switch.

Nobody has a realistic choice of ten thousand occupations.

The occupation of pro hockey player exists in the universe.

They dont hire pro hockey players in the Congo. So a congolese with an aptitude for hockey is more like to become a soccer player than a hockey player.

Every US town hires fireman- very few american towns hires sherpa guides for mount everest. So the fact that both eschewed the occupation of sherpa guide for being a firemen doesnt prove much.

Natural born children are more similiar to their parents in occupation than are adopted kids -which shows nature counters nurture.

The fact that both twins occupationally differed from their parents is to be expected.
The fact that both ended up in the same occupation as each other is hardly a miracle. If they were both in some rare occupation like Pro Quarter back then that would suggest something.

So the fact that twins seperated at birth both become firemen is a minor and not a major coincidence even if their adopted parents were CPA's.

Your scenario does not even make sense.

If you and I are twins raised apart and dont know each other exist but are psychicly linked then why would we collaborate psychically to both go to med school, but not collaborate to find each other nor even let each either know we even exist in first place?

According to you we would both agree to a pact to go into debt for med school, or fire fighting school, but we would NOT send each other our names and phone numbers through the same psychic ether.

Why would they comand each other to go through the rigors of fire fighter training and but not send a simple "high im your brother pete- call me at 555-5555" with the same telepathy?

you're not making sense even on a theoretical level.

It's not like either of these men lived in the Congo. Travel is an opportunity open to most Americans and therefore the sky is the limit re: occupations.



Think about it, if adopted parents follow a particular career path then this will influence an adopted child regardless of their genetic predisposition for digging ditches or following an outdoor career path. If you had two sets of adopted parents with different career paths and different circumstances then it makes it all the more statistically unlikely two separated twins would follow exactly the same career path that counters their adopted parents wishes.



Telepathic connections are not very well understood. I can't therefore offer a model which explains who the twins connect with each other. Sheldrake's morphic resonance theory is one possibility where across geographic distance the twins are able to draw upon a similar energy source influencing their life paths in exactly the same way over and above genetic or environmental factors.
