They may not be trying to sell something but it makes me think of the article.
Doesn't always have to be selling something though, it can be as simple as someone talking up a company's/organisation's interest and discrediting or exhausting their opponents in a level that would be considered excessive for an ordinary person to do. Political/Ideological astroturfing is quite popular, nearly as popular as the marketing variant actually I'd say.
They might discredit you by not paying attention to you either, which in that case, takes less effort.
