Quite so. The best solution is have everyone working who is capable of work. Then there would be no dead-beats to feed.

In order for that to happen there needs to be enough jobs...but you and I both know not everyone is capable of holding a job, and sometimes even people capable of holding a job cannot find work, or cannot make enough money to make ends meet. So if we get rid of disability, welfare, foodstamps and things of that nature what do you propose we do in those instances. That is what I was talking about after all. Ignoring the issue does not solve anything if you think it does you are mistaking.

As much of a science advocate I am, I actually think the money might be better spent on other things.

Like I always say though NASA may be very critical in the future. If we can travel to a distant planet, or travel through the time, the money will be worth it. But science for the sake of science is narcissistic endeavor.

Our landing on the moon was pretty hedonistic. I mean the whole purpose of that was to prove how superior technologically we were to the rest of the world. This isn't what science should be about. Science should be about helping humanity and if the best way to help humanity is to take some of the funding out of NASA and give it to other areas, then I am fine with that.

I'd like to see money taken out of nuclear weapon technology as well.

Science should be about helping people, not proving a point, or destroying the world.

If someone can prove to me that NASA is about helping the world then I may change my mind.

Again this is not an attack on science and all it is a shame. But I just don't see the evidence that NASA is helping the world more than it is hurting by spending trillions of dollars on fun scientific technology. I mean it's fun, it's cool, but where is it headed? Is the whole of humanity being taken into account? That is the question that needs to be asked.

You could easily answer all of your own questions by actually doing research into what NASA does, the benefits of their program, or even the benefits of Apollo instead of assuming like millions of others that it is somehow "narcissistic science" who's funding should go towards "helping humanity" in other areas (NASA's budget is miniscule as is). As if applications of space technology do not permeate our society. It is sad how little people know or care about space. "They should spend that money elsewhere"... sigh. It doesn't matter all that much that you are ignorant of the big picture in this case, but unfortunately there are many politicians who think like this

You are making a Large Error. You think it is the Duty of the Able to help the disabled. It isn't. It is not a duty. It is a favor.

Don't change the subject the question was what do you suggest as an effective solution? that is what I asked you, how is leaving the disabled and those who can't make enough to make ends meet to fend for themselves when we have the means to have a safety net to help citizens who end up in these situations a solution? Sorry but you fail....And maybe a website for people with a disability is not the best place to go on about how people with disabilities should be treated as second class citizens. Just a thought.

I can take your arguments about as seriously as Reefer Madness.

So ... who hijacked this thread from the stated topic of "Massive cuts of NASA budget" to one concerned with making wealthy people support disabled people?

And why hasn't that person started their own thread that addresses the needs of the disabled instead of hijacking unrelated threads?

The pot and the kettle are both black Fnord. You've contributed to the off topic conversation several times yourself. All I have to say.

Hey now, red and gold look pretty good together.

Sounds like a cool gig. I'll be immortalized, until I fall out of favor, then they'll blow big holes out of my work!

Think I'll just stay home...

This is the first post I noticed that went very off topic:

Dilbert wrote:
Defense budget is not the largest chunk of the US federal budget: defense spending is about 20%. Majority of that money is spent on soldier's salaries... not weapons.

Wanna know what the largest chunk of the federal budget is? Entitlements: medicare, medicaid, social security, wellfare. Whooping 56%!

45% of US families receive government support. :(

I have a solution for ya: get a job, drop the vices, and reduce discretionary spending. Don't eat junk food, don't drink, don't smoke, work out regularly, and maybe they'll be able to support themselves and won't need a handfull of expensive pills every single day.

A lot of issues would go away overnight if only people changed their habits.

Some controversial things were said so of course people were going to express their disagreement, and thus an off topic debate got started. That is my diagnoses.

So why not drop the bleeding-heart nonsense and take it to another thread?

I think you just offered your own solution. You yourself have said that you just move on when posts or threads annoy you. Take it from there. Or, you could ask a moderator to split this if it bothers you that much.

Since it is, as you say, already off track, I'd rather leave it at that than to hijack it even further. I wasn't planning to post here again, but you did ask.
