They found God. Turns out, he's really tiny.

That would be disappointing but relatively easily checked if some samples can be brought back to Earth for analysis on a future mission. There are extromophile bacteria that live on Earth in more hostile environments than found on Mars so I think there is hope for such a discovery. If microbial life once existed on Mars I think it highly likely that it will still exist today, having evolved over millions of years to cope with the thinning atmosphere and reduction in available water. It is likely the changes to the climate of Mars were relatively slow which may have given enough time for adaptive evolutionary changes.

If living microbial life is found is would be extremely exciting to analyse its biochemistry and see if it is based on DNA and if so the same base-pairs as life on Earth or if it has evolved an entirely different biochemistry.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed and just hope the "Earthshaking discovery" isn't a false alarm or something less exciting such as the discovery of rare minerals. We should know within a couple of weeks anyway.

I voted that they discovered that Mars once had microbial life.

Apparently there is no huge discovery ...

Even with all the glitz, as a non discovery it hardly ranks with the non discovery of the Higgs Boson.

I did notice that they have hung around the boring landing area, and not progressed toward mentioned targets, since they found those blown up bits of Plastametal from the Droids.

One X-Ray defraction scan, and they will shut up.

With no way to return the findings, the manned mission is going in Black Ops. Sifting through a hundred thousand year old battle field is a wealth of leading technology.

The response from NASA is disappointing to say the least. It leaves more questions than it answers and smells of either incompetence or conspiracy.

The NASA guy who released those sensational titbits of an "Earthshaking discovery" should be reprimanded or fired. He discredits NASA. I'm very annoyed by this hype... then nothing.

Managerial sloth and incompetence is how this once promising Agency ended up. It started by gathering together the brightest and the best and ended up with managerial CYA that cost the lives of two shuttle crews. NASA should be abolished or at least its current management given the axe.

from what i read in the newspaper today, it apparently is not much of anything other than some biological precursor materials.
