I like to think so too. I'm pretty happy to be living in Massachusetts. The federal news networks trying to impose their bigoted propaganda on my region concerns me though. The U.S. is a threat to the New English values of tolerance, equality, and respect for others. It's hard not be paranoid with that monster, Washington D.C., having control over my region. Maybe I shouldn't worry so much, New England has always proven to stay true to its values. The feds have never been able to break the spirit of New England, no matter how much they've tried. Perhaps I should have more faith in my region.

I grow tired of hearing about American society. I'd probably feel better if I just ignored the presence of the rest of the U.S. and focused on my own region, but that's pretty difficult to do with all of the media that's available. I probably wouldn't be angry as often, if I only paid attention to local news. I'm pretty happy with the way things are going around here, despite that there have been two tragedies over the past few years. At least they didn't bring out the worst in people. Maybe the first step to avoid hearing about these things is to leave Wrongplanet. I should probably also stop watching the news and reading national newspapers. I have a tendency to want to know what's going on in the world, but I guess I'll just try to stop caring. I'd be better off without their negativity.

I hope I'm not steering the discussion away from the point of the thread, but I just had to comment that this is the first time I've heard about New England regionalism. There are very vocal southerners on WP - - some of whom I wish would keep their opinions to themselves - though many others are very cool. There is a group of fellow pacific Northwesterners I exchange communications with who I share a common regional bond and sensibilities with here on WP. Sorry for changing the subject there.

That reminds me about how the NRA partnered with the KKK, after the slaves were freed, to prevent blacks from obtaining guns.

I think it's probably because most New Englanders don't seem to perceive any outside influences as a threat. The population here, especially around the Boston area, is largely made up of minorities and there don't seem to be many issues with intolerance. There rarely seem to be any issues with intolerance for people from other parts of the country either. New England's proximity to Quebec has also helped contribute to its tolerance for people from different cultures. I'm concerned that intolerance from other places could spread here through the media, and that would damage my status because I'm on the spectrum. I've come to realize how good I have it here compared to a lot of other places, and I want it to stay that way.
