This is a preposterous overgeneralization.

Yes, there are religious nutters who home school in order to prevent their kids from learning about reality.

But there are plenty of other reasons that people home school and some home schooled kids have received much better educations than they could have in the "educational" institutions provided by their local government.

From my experience - which I admit is just a random sampling - home schooling is still mostly done by social and religious conservatives.

There are plenty of creationist/bible zealots who want to avoid the risk of exposing their little ones to pesky things like biology, geology and astronomy, but if you peruse the parents board on this site, you will find plenty of parents who flee the system in order to avoid subjecting their children to the inappropriate or abusive treatment. These are children who for a variety of reasons (e.g. autism, aspergers, NVLD, etc.) don't comfortably fit in the available system.

The options are: accept whatever the "inclusive" program is (which may involve the kind of horror stories that produced this thread) or have the school district pay for a specialized school, sometimes not really appropriate for people on the mild/high functioning end of things, or home school. Sometimes that is the best option.

While I am myself autistic, and have an autistic daughter, I do not presume to think that I'd know best when it comes to any sort of special education. So far, my daughter has had good luck with excellent public school special ed programs for autistic kids.

When things like this occur and officials wonder why school shootings happen...

Ugh. This is f*****g moronic. He's 11 for f**k's sake! Here, even if he were neurotypical, they wouldn't consider arresting him. He might get some detention, but not f*****g arrested. This makes me glad I'm not an American. If I lived in the US during my late elementary and middle school years, well, I'd probably have a rap sheet by now. I hope this kid's parents can afford a good lawyer, and maybe sue the pants off the school while they are at it.

Sadly I just finished an article about the 15 year old autistic girl where the flight attendant freaked out over nothing and caused the plane to make an emergency landing to get the family off the plane. I read the comments and those commenters were brutal toward the mother and child...

As for this kid, are there any areas of the US where ASD kids are accepted as they are and where this kid can feel safe?

True. On the optimistic side, he didn't get tased or shot for non-compliance with the freindly stormtrooper.

Furthermore, this is but one example of the reasons why I've become a Libertarian over the years. -- Stuff like this only go to illustrate the money that we pay in taxes go towards paying people who develop policies where the above happens, and our continual inaction against such actions only make us collectively responsible for the continuation of such abuses.

They might had him arrested because he is black.

Yeah because the mother said her daughter may try and scratch and airlines take things very seriously. If she were a 5 year old girl, would they have still reacted that way, I dunno.

You don't know what scratching is? It's where you take you finger nails and run them across someone's skin and if you do it hard enough, it cuts it open.

There have been two threads about this incident, I will link them right now. I don't recall the pray for us post.
