alexis de Tocqueville had these righties sussed out in the 19th century, they see themselves as on the path to riches and to hell with those they leave behind/trample over on the way up there. IOW the upper class can be evil as long as they get to be a part of it.

Absolutely. The last place I want to live in is where I have to crush underfoot another person to get ahead, till I'm in time crushed underfoot.
why so many people are oblivious to this truth, is a continuing puzzlement.
The lack of compassion is because we blame people for their outcome.
Common Attitude: "If you're getting stepped on, then it's your fault".
It's not your fault if someone victimizes you; it's the fault of the one hurting you.
We Americans are supposed to believe in fair play. What's happened to all those Christian values you conservatives claim to believe in, such as love your neighbor, and love your enemies? Or has the right replaced Christ with Ayn RAnd on the cross?
Ayn Rand won.
The American culture is .. it's your fault ....
- that you're too lazy to find a job
- that you don't try to better yourself
- that you don't get another job
- that you can't hold onto a job
- that you had more kids than you can support
- that you don't pursue more education
- that you didn't take better care of yourself
So, don't go looking for compassion, when, it's your fault ....
