Indubitably.

Without any doubt whatsoever.

Kinda nice, what?

Just my opinion, but the several Republics of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland (all of Ireland) would be nice. Some people would go for the Republic of Kernow (Cornwall) as well. A Republic of the Isle of Man would be good too... some of my lot originate from there.

Alfred was King of the Ango-Saxons/English, not all of England. The North was under Danelaw. Alfred, however, is often considered the first English king, as he was king of a united people.

Alfred the Great was king of much more than Wessex. He was considered, by the Anglo-Saxons, to be the first true King of the united English people.

It's true that he wasn't king of "all England" I never said he was.

Athelstan is considered the first "official" king of all the Anglo-Saxons. He was a grandson of Alfred the Great.

Wessex was established right after the Anglo-Saxon conquest in the late 400s. There are records of kings of Wessex from at least 519. They became Christian in the 7th century.

Agreed.

At last a sensible political point online.

If they get rid of the monarchy they would no longer be able to call the country "the United Kingdom".

They would hafta change the name to the "Union of British Republics" ( kinda like when they got rid of the Czar they changed the name of the Russian Empire to "the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics").

Not a bad idea... maybe a loose union amongst equals. Anything that gets away from the Westminster-centric old etonians **** we have to put up with at the moment. The monarchy symbolises all the old ways of thinking and we will never move forward from the 19th and 20th centuries until they go.

He is only a CLAIMANT to the non-existent kingship of a non-existent kingdom.

He is not king of the French Republic.

Yeah, but what happens when he walks into a restaurant?

I thought you wanted to divvy them all up, loosely bound. But will the Big Powers leave them alone?

Well..we are talking about two slightly different things. I was thinking along the lines that you would have the existing United Kingdom: consisting of Scotland, Northern Ireland, England. Wales was long lumped with England, but now has its own parliament (as does Scotland). So if they abolished the monarchy then you would just have the same country, but it would be a union of countries with parlaiments: ergo a "union of republics".

But someone above suggested including ALL of Ireland, and then breaking off Cornwall from England as a separate republic, and the same with the Isle of Man. So that would be a little bit different a set up. The Republic of Ireland wouldn't be expected to unite with England unless both are part of some really big club of countries (like the whole EU).

There would be the EU and the GBU (?), if a name for the United Republics of England, Northern Ireland, the Irish Republic, Wales, Cornwall, and Scotland could be agreed upon.

(Did I miss one? Sodor, perhaps? ;) )

Well...WWI was a bit of a family spat.

We're way ahead of Trump on the wall... Hadrian's wall went up centuries ago. OK that was the Romans, but they were over here at the time.
