The environmental group has announced it will cause 10 days of disruption in July unless plans to expand the airport are scrapped.

An initial one-day protest will go ahead on June 18 to 'pause' flights before a longer protest of 'up to 10 days' begins on July 1, Extinction Rebellion said.

The group described air travel as 'genocidal'

Baroness Vere [aviation minister] warned: 'Flying drones near an airport is a serious criminal offence and using drones to deliberately put people's safety at risk carries a maximum life sentence. 'Any illegal activity must be met with the full force of the law.'

It looks like the Metropolitan Police may take a more proactive approach this time.

Scotland Yard wants to charge more than 1,100 people who were arrested during last month’s Extinction Rebellion protests, a senior office has said. The group’s tactics involved volunteers deliberately getting themselves arrest to cause maximum disruption at roadblocks on Waterloo Bridge, Oxford Circus and Marble Arch, while others glued themselves to trains and buildings. More than 70 activists have so far been charged in connection with the demonstrations that brought parts of London to a standstill for 10 days.

Its expected to have cost the force at least £7.5 million. Some 1,130 people were arrested during the protests and 10,000 police officers were deployed over the two weeks.

At a briefing on Friday, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor said the Metropolitan Police will be pushing for the prosecution of every one of them to deter similar tactics being used in the future.

I guess that makes some common sense. If the protestors are locked away in jail, they might be prevented from flying drones into aircraft as they take-off or land. They might prevent a number of airplane crashes.
