Yeah just pretty much every one. And they always refer to "business" like every business wants the vote over turned. It's just pretty much all the big ones that don't really help people in the long run.

Typical good sense from Mr. Powell. I've never been able to understand the love affair between the left, with its instinctive (and justified) distaste for kleptocratic corporations, and the EU. When I was a socialist, a frightful condition from which I've since recovered, I was perhaps more Eurosceptic than I am now as a traditionalist conservative (strictly small 'C'). As Tony Benn, a genuine and noble socialist, quite rightly pointed out, the EU is the only country in the world - and it is a country - with a constitution biased irrecoverably towards capitalism and privatisation. It makes me laugh (or cry?) to see clueless "Corbynistas" my age clamouring to nationalise the railways (a policy I'm totally in favour of) and yet equally tenacious in their support for the EU. Do they not realise that it's illegal under fascist EU law for member states to nationalise industry? That's what happens when you hand German and French bankers control of a continent. And as for those who pitifully claim that the EU can be "reformed", they ought to ask David Cameron how that one went in 2016. The EU is unsalvageable and must be replaced with a Gaullist union of sovereign nation states.

Likewise, and it's an argument which I struggled to get left-leaning friends to comprehend at the time of the referendum, even though I'm somewhat left-leaning myself and argued from that perspective - another prime example being competitive tendering in our public services. It may be not quite so egregious, but I'm always reminded of George Orwell's criticisms of the pro-Stalinist left in his time.

While the younger Hitchens isn't quite on his late brothers level in terms of scathing wit, that's certainly an apt moniker.

While having perhaps marginally less linguistic ability than Christopher, Peter has always cut the more impressive figure for me, precisely because of his guilelessness. I also think, incidentally, he happens to be closer to being right on a greater number of issues. Christopher had a slightly better mind, but allowed it to be overcome by intellectual vanity and as an inevitable result - intellectual fashion. Peter was always far more independently minded, though he too has always been on the intellectually vain side.
