It’ll count less once Trump is gone.

They don’t hang out with very many actual people.

That's a gross over generalization. Shıt happens. Read the article referenced by the OP.

It's not just Georgia. You just happen to live there. It's the whole Western world. Europe and anywhere else Europeans have settled and become the predominant culture.

Well the whole American south gets to be the scapegoat for all the racism in the USA because of the whole slavery thing. But like I said, white-shaming ain't going to solve the issues of racism. If anything it makes racism worse.

I've noticed similar among my countrymen; just like Yankees want to focus on Southern racism, Canadians often like to talk about American racism, so they don't have to discuss or consider Canadian racism.

For what it's forth, we find it in the political sphere too. Historically left-leaning parties weren't willing to risk condemning and distancing themselves from white nationalist/white supremacist types who expressed support for left-populist ideology and positions. The radical left was more likely to condemn those sorts, thankfully, but it was just one of many issues that put them outside the window so to speak. While it's true that for the most part people of that mindset no longer identify with left-wing politics people should understand that it wasn't always such a polarized issue and that we're only a few generations removed from that situation.

It might be comforting to condemn monsters that you don't have to feel any identification with, but it's more useful and honest to start with the ones closest to you.

I agree, I think it's important to remember that we are all human and nobody is perfect.

Sigmund Freud once observed: They start burning books just before they're ready to start burning people (paraphrased from memory).

I don't approve of burning books, but the title of the story is false. The correct title is: "College Students in Georgia Burn Racist Book."

What they did was the equivalent of burning, say, a Klux Klan membership manual.

So, what exactly about this book is racist? :?

I don't think there's anything wrong with burning a symbol of something you oppose as form of protest. When the Hungarians rebelled against Soviet Occupation in the 1950s, they tore down a lot of hammer-and-sickle symbols and most likely burned a few. Anyway the point here is that this lady wrote a book exposing the effect of white racism on Latinos such as herself (of which she has had first-hand experience) and a bunch of white people then felt the need to burn copies of that book. Yes book-burning has bad optics for sure, but OTOH you're probably not going to get many people upset if you burn copies of Mein Kampf. It matters what book is burning and who's doing the burning.

Not a situation to which any sort of moral equivalence applies.

Sargon made an interesting video about this:

He surprised me in the way he approached this topic, looking at wider issues.

I am so ashamed of being white.

I feel cursed being in this white skin.

Save for a few loons and suck ups, I doubt anyone seriously believes that.

White privilege isn't a reason to feel ashamed or personally guilty. You didn't choose for it to exist or create it. It's something to be aware of when you're hearing people who might not benefit from it describe their experience.
