Well somebody has to be held accountable. I sense the fire was intentional.

Apparently a construction accident during restoration started the fire.

The same kind of thing happened to Windsor Castle back in the 90s.

I can understand chagrin about spending almost a billion euros to restore a cathedral.....when that billion euros could be used to feed hungry people. That makes sense.

Notre Dame is a French national monument. A symbol of the French nation.

It’s like not caring about restoring Ayer Rock should it explode, somehow. A symbol of the Australian nation. Or our Mount Rushmore.

There is a unique atmosphere in Notre Dame... even compared to other great cathedrals... imo.

I heard a great discussion on BBC 4 radio about this. It has, unfortunately, entered the political arena. Macron sees a opportunity to leave a lasting legacy (what is it with these guys?) and have a contemporary "Macron spire" erected in the middle of it. Some people want the spire left out completely, as it was a late addition to the cathedral and a bit of a blot on a magnificent gothic building.

Most interesting of all are the people who want to re-build it in the same manner in which it was originally built. Obviously stuff like lime mortar... but also, if you need a hammer, you make a hammer... cast the metal, carve the handle etc. This would also require wooden scaffolding and they are not sure if there are enough tall trees left to do it. Personally, I'd stick to the original materials like lime mortar, but utilise the advantage of modern techniques. The stone still has to be cut the traditional way.

It will be rebuilt... but might take a very long time. I'm sure it'll be finished before the sun turns nova.

To create a Macron Spire would be absurd.

That spire was more Gothic than the cathedral itself.

From what I could salvage, it was the craftmanship of one of the Notre Dame workers who didn't stub out a cigarette properly, when working on the scaffolding in some of the ramparts.

There you have it.
