For things that are necessary and critical for the well being and safety of a country, if the country has the resources to do so, they absolutely should be manufacturing such products themselves. My great hope in addition to this virus affecting the least number of people as possible is that the takeaway from all of this, the wake up call, is that the U.S. detaches from trading with China as much as possible. If other countries want to continue to rely on Chinese goods after this, that's their prerogative. The U.S. however? Kick China to the curb and start that process now! We should never have been doing it in the first place.

You can’t really do that Right Now because greedy people in trump’s class have offshored production of damned near everything to China, including antibiotics/medicine production. To slam the doors on China instantly would mean no more medicine for sick Americans and a whole lot of Americans would die of curable bacterial infections.

Not sure how long it would take to setup and start producing your own medicine again. You’d have to be willing to sacrifice a lot of American lives to cut the China cord instantly.

Canada is doing a better job of it. Our federal leadership has clear and unified messaging about it that people are mostly complying with - hence the lower infection and death rates, unlike the USA that currently leads the world with infection rates and eventually death toll.
Then you don’t need our masks.
Would you accept it as a fair America first deal if the USA keeps all of the N95 masks 3M produces in the USA and Canada and Latin America keep their production for themselves and refuse to sell them to the USA in return?
No. If a factory owned by Canadians makes the masks, then those Canadians own those masks and can do what they want with them.  Unless Canada chooses to socialize all manufacturing on Canadian soil, anything manufactured by an American-owned factory in Canada belongs to the American owners of that factory.

Canada can start manufacturing its own products instead of relying so much on Americans building factories in Canada to provide jobs for Canadians.  It's the fault of Canada's leadership that Canada is so dependent on America.

Right now I’d say New York needs them more than you.

Why would we ever cut that off?

We’re not evil.

You take care of your own first.

1) You see no point in maintaining allies and trading partners?

2) 3M pointed out that if Canada and Latin America retaliate with the same measures, and the USA is dependent on domestic N95 production only, the USA will actually suffer a net loss of N95 masks. (I have no idea if we make them in Canada or not. I Assume they’re made in Latin America more so than Canada, but both have been lumped together in the article.)

If U.S. manufacturers who are not currently manufacturing N95 masks like 3M does start producing N95 masks as a produce in demand then I think it's safe to assume that there would be an increase in supply. This virus isn't going to go way in a few months.

It’s not going to end in a few months, but it’s likely to peak. Why would you want fewer masks for your doctors and nurses at their greatest time of need? :?

Doctors and nurses take 5-10+ years to produce. You can’t just fire up a factory and replace your medical expertise because you let them die as the result of a foolish trade war over medical supplies.

American corporations don’t have factories here to provide charity jobs for Canadians. They’re here to:

A) Exploit cheap labour.
B) Utilize expertise.
C) Expand their market share into Canada and abroad via our trading partners.

They’re not here “doing us a favour.” They’re here to make money.

But I’d be okay with them f*****g off and some more civil business partner replacing them.

Sooo, what you’re saying is, you still don’t understand what “Net Loss,” means, eh?

I highly recommend googling it.

I could argue on the merits of artisanal smoked hams from Virginia, but you are spot-on about the Vermont syrup!

I don't understand which way you are bringing up "Net Loss". I see two different ways to question it?

If American corporations pulled out of Canada, the Canadian economy would collapse long before their replacements even showed up!  That "cheap labor" you brag about would not be so cheap if they had some marketable skills; so yes, American corporations really are doing Canada a favor -- a BIG favor -- by building factories there..

The way that 3M officials raised it to trump when they informed him that if they keep American production of their masks within the USA and don’t supply Canada or Latin America, and in return Canada and Latin America decide to withhold our production of masks from the USA (seems reasonable, no?) then the USA will have a Net Loss of N95 masks because more N95 masks enter the USA from Canada and Latin American production than get shipped to both destinations by the USA.

trump’s dangerous game of trade wars with medical equipment could result in American doctors having fewer N95 masks to use than they have access to right now - which makes it not only a dick move to his closest trading partners, but a massive slap across the face to his own people

Net Loss like that. The kind that would result in more American doctors and nurses dying, not fewer.

Fake news. If American corporations aren’t happy with padding their bottom lines in Canada they can f**k off and China will fill the void as they continue to buy Canada.

It’s not the best case scenario for Canadians, but it Is what’s happening.

Thanks for explaining. I was wondering about if you meant net loss in that term or in the term of receiving less per unit from the government than the free market.
