No, statues are art. You might argue that statues are a part of art history, but looking at a statue does not inform anyone about the history of the individual so memorialized. We remember history by learning about it in history classes.

It is psychologically exhausting to continually see people on WP post stupid, insensitive, hostile, and dismissive comments every time there is a news story about someone trying to do something anti-racist.

ASPartOfMe wrote:
Mars. Inc. can name their rice as they please but this is a stretch. Nazi's used the Jewish star to mark Jews for death, a lot worse then what the racists did yet no Jews I have read about have disowned the Jewish star based on how the Nazis used it, it is on the Israeli flag, prominent in most synagogues.

First of all, whatever the Jews choose to do or not do is irrelevant because this thread is about businesses choosing to change their own brands. The thread is not about a racially marginalized group doing something in response to racism (of which anti-semitism is one type). Your analogy with the Jews makes no sense whatsoever.

Second of all, you are comparing the symbol of a food brand to the "Jewish star"?! (I assume you are referring to the star of David.) A religious/cultural symbol compared to the picture on a box of food?? Those are two wildly different things, and the comparison makes no sense.

Third, you are trying to downplay what these businesses are doing by comparing African slavery and racism to the Holocaust. "It's less important than this other thing, therefore it's not important," is a stupid and fallacious argument. Since you are always commenting about how awful it is that women and girls go undiagnosed and everyone on Earth should have their autism self-diagnosis respected and some people even need to self-diagnose, how about if I say that none of that is important because it's not as big of a deal as the Holocaust? Dismiss it by making some random and irrelevant comparison?

Quote:
As the "mammy" image came from minstrel shows the racism connection to Aunt Jemima is more concrete. Yet the first Aunt Jemima model Nancy Green born into slavery used the money she earned to do missionary work and advocate for civil rights. This was a version of what is known as reappropriation a concept that will forever be foreign to those enforcing cancel culture on us.

Please go read something and actually learn what "re-appropriation" means. There are just no words for how confused and wrong you are.

And who is "us"? Who is being "cancelled"? Again, these businesses chose to change their own brands. Are they cancelling their own brands? Cancel culture is a meme referring to the de-platforming of people who have unpopular opinions. Are the businesses de-platforming themselves?

Not if the 1619 project has anything to say about it.

How dare they advocate for teaching more than just white history.

They already have changed Tom & Jerry by getting rid of the black woman's voice (Who sounded awesome and a real character herself) and replacing it with a half-hearted voice that's barely there. They've also got rid of racist jokes.

Regarding the statues, yes they do show our history, they are markers of it, whether good or bad. History isn't always good, it often isn't. If we get rid of all our markers in history (Again, whether they are good or bad) how would you know history lessons taught to us aren't being changed even more, or even erased? We need to remember our history.

"Slavery was an American invention!"

"That's not accurate at all."

"Get out of here with your white history!"

Seems a bit peculiar that statuary and so forth is being removed whilst workplace conditions and workforce freedom in the contemporary textile, mining, sex and illicit drugs industries are not being focused on.
Maybe I’m severely out of touch.

It looks like that to me too.

Very good point, why would tearing down statues make those industries change their ways? I think we need to focus on them and boycott those companies using slave labour. People who take illegal drugs often don't seem to realize/ignore that deaths and other horrible things happen as an occurrence of drug trafficking. Maybe I'm missing something here?

That's not what I mean and you know it.

Black and indigenous perspectives are entirely missing when history, especially the history of the Americas is taught. Your childish mocking of this fact makes it clear that you don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about.

Funny to see Colgate (an American company) only cleaning up their act on their Asian division now....clearly Chinese don't care how Africans are portrayed

Might not be what you meant. Doesn't change the fact that the 1619 project includes essays presenting that as fact. I'm all for different perspectives, but if it blatantly sacrifices accuracy in the name of a political narrative, then it has no place in history class.

You can debunk an incorrect essay, I'm sorry that incorrect idea triggers you to the point you can't discuss it.

Really? You're the one who needed to mock an idea instead of directly discussing it.

He has a point though. If they're going to blatantly lie about history to people, then how can you take anything else they say seriously? Something so obviously trying to deceive would ring alarm bells for me too.
