The stock market is regulated already. The rules make it so that rich people get richer and poor people stay poor. That's why these rich hedge fund guys, and the robinhood trading app, are pissed about the whole gamestop/amc/blackberry thing - little guys are getting theirs instead.

And now a different reddit subforum is pumping up dogecoin cryptocurrency - up 380% in a day. They could send it up thousands of % for no reason other than they want to as far as I read. There's no hedge fund shorting it I don't think, so not sure wtf it's all about besides just picking something to pump.

And there's a play on silver - something about there not being enough physical silver to go around and it's value being kept too low something something I'm not sure exactly, but they're pumping silver for some reason, too.

A bunch of little guys are going to make big money out of all of this, and some big guys will get screwed, and some little guys will lose, too.. the whole thing is fascinating, but so far I haven't jumped in on any of this because it all seems like by the time you hear about it and transfer some money around it's too late and the big money has been made and now you might be one of the suckers caught holding the hot potato. Especially with gamestop. I dunno about all the rest of the plays tbh - but what I do know is I don't have cash sitting in the various trading accounts required to buy/sell at the moment and I'd have to determine which accounts I'd need it in and wait minimum days to transfer it, and maximum weeks to set them up. So this game is being played by people who had whatever accounts are necessary already set up with cash sitting in them waiting to be invested. Maybe too late to get in on any of them relatively safely considering the lag time to go from my chequing account to being involved.

You do not want to be buying GameStop right now:

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/game ... 26052.html

Silver market is a bit more complicated:

https://www.yahoo.com/finance/news/cita ... 12706.html

There has always been a big difference between silver futures and physical silver. Silver futures is basically an IOU note with a promise to get a certain amount of silver within a timeframe. It can be shorted just like stocks. Physical silver is just as it sounds, the actual metal. It can be held in bars, rounds or even coins. Sterling items often get sold for their melt silver vale. The problem is that if those holding the physical silver decide not to sell on the market, it makes the ones holding the futures nervous because they are on the hook if the price goes up. Often those futures are leveraged, meaning one can really lose a lot more than what you originally put in.

Right now, physical silver is in a holding pattern. Very few are selling the actual metal at this point. Why would you sell your physical holdings if you expect that there could be a large rise in the market? While there is a large supply of the metal, not everyone is selling at this time. I am holding onto what I got for sure until the market price stabilizes either way. If it goes down, I will just stockpile more in my safety deposit box at the bank at a cheaper price. I am a long term investor, not a short term one.

If you think silver is a money maker, look at rhodium now:

At one time in the 1990s, I had a few oz., but cashed them out to help pay toward my college bills. Oh well.

What market/exchange is the current silver plays playing out on? Futures? Silver mining companies? Physical purchases? All of the above? Curious and don't know.

What's made Rhodium go up 4x in 5 years? Demand for new electronics? EV's?

The physical silver market is very hot. Some coin dealers are holding onto their silver bullion and scrap stock, as they are having a hard time replacing what they sell. Under normal market conditions, they would be selling just as fast as they would buy. They make money by charging a premium over spot value when they sell and only pay spot price (or lower) when customers sell to them. The catch is when they sell out and have no replacement inventory coming in. That has somewhat has been happening since the pandemic started a year ago. It has gotten worse with the recent political instability.

When someone comes into a coin dealer with common silver coins to sell, the dealer will usually offer so much times face value. How much that they offer is tied to the current spot price of silver and how much profit the dealer is planning on making. For example, I bought three silver quarters two weeks ago for nineteen times face value. The dealer likely paid fourteen times face value for each coin. So, they made a net profit of $3.75 in selling the coins.

Now, the market has gone up to a point that they would have to offer about twenty times face to buy the same coins. I am not interested in making a measly $.75, so I will hold onto them with the chance that they will increase in value. Yes, they could also go down. However I hedged my bet by picking out coins that have numismatic value on top of the silver value. That keeps my potential loss restricted to what ever value is higher at the time of selling.

The federal reserve has released quite a bit of cash to prop up the economy lately. Well, that will cause inflation later on. Investors who do not trust the stock market and/or have extra to spend from stocks are putting it into commodities. There is also a push for both silver mining stocks and silver futures as well. There is also the industrial usage of silver that plays into the market value. So the real answer is all of the above plays into the market increase.

Rhodium is a tricky metal. It is very rare, with Russia and South Africa holding the majority of the mines. It is used in catalytic reactions for industry and in other technologies. The two countries control how much of it is on the market at any given time, so prices can be controlled. Some jewelry is rhodium plated because it is very corrosion resistant, yet appears to look like platinum (a much cheaper metal).

The silver market is in a correction phase today. The group pushing for the price rise failed, as I knew they would. The regulators changed the requirements on the amount of money needed to guarantee silver stock. It was expected to happen with the market rules in play.

https://finance.yahoo.com/news/wallstre ... 13337.html

Funny, I am content that it went down the way it did. The money that I technically “lost” was all on paper and it will go up again. It does not affect my daily life. However, some market jumpers are now going crazy as they need to sell their stock to make up for their losses when they bought high yesterday. That is the major difference between a long term investor (me) and a short term investor (those jumping into the market).

Silver would have to go below $5/oz. before I would get worried about my real losses. However, I would likely just double down and purchase more instead of selling. The chance of that happening is beyond low right now. It has a price floor of $20/oz. that will be hard to break through.
