I do have to say the posters here have handled this one much better than the Atlanta shooting and the Miami Beach chaos. Why do you think that is?

I will take guesses as to why.

With Atlanta, you had white gunmen, mostly Asian victims, and this occurring after a year of spiking anti-Asian attacks. It was "common sense" to conclude it was an anti-Asian hate crime. Despite the race of the murderer and his victims being the only public evidence that this was a hate crime people and not only here do not seem open to changing their conclusions. People have also concluded that racism was the reason he chose to use those massage parlors based on nothing more than "Hot Asian girls" is a thing in porn and the like.

With Miami Beach, there is a long-standing stereotype of who spring breakers are. Coming during a time of racial reckoning it was easy for many to conclude white supremacist cops were intentionally letting their fellow entitled white spoiled privileged brats get away with it. Finding out the spring breakers are POC and the cops going in making it easy to pivot without changing the "it's racism" narrative.

Boulder is different. For over 24 hours we had no idea about the demographics of the gunmen or his victims were so no racism conclusions. The revelation of the gunmen having an "Islamic" name would have set off a whole bunch of jihadism terrorism conclusions if not for the suspects' brother saying an hour or too later the suspect is seriously mentally ill.

Maybe the authorities and the media should make it a guideline?

Fox News is saying ...

1) he traveled 20 miles from his house to get to this store
2) this supermarket has a Kosher deli and provides custom Kosher meals

So, it's a suspected ethnic (racist) attack?

More tenuous circumstantial “evidence”.

Yes, I searched, and found nothing.

However, I did find that the *King Sooper* does serve Kosher food.

It is an example of tabloid journalism, which is something that rational people should never take seriously.

"He was one of those guys with a short fuse," Hernandez told The Associated Press. "Once he gets mad, it’s like something takes over and it’s not him. There is no stopping him at that point."

Angel Hernandez, a former high school wrestling teammate, said Alissa got enraged after losing a match in practice once, yelling he would kill everyone. Hernandez said the coach kicked Alissa off the team for the outburst.

Alissa "got up in classroom, walked over to the victim & ‘cold cocked’ him in the head," the affidavit read. Alissa complained that the student had made fun of him and called him "racial names" weeks earlier. An Arvada police report on the incident said the victim was bloodied and vomiting after the assault. Alissa was suspended from school and sentenced to probation and community service.

The suspected gunman who killed 10 people in a mass shooting at a Boulder, Colo., grocery store this week was previously known to the FBI, according to a report.

Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, a 21-year-old from the Denver suburb of Arvada, was linked to another individual under investigation by the bureau, The New York Times reported Tuesday, citing law enforcement officials.

When I read the latest news articles on this mass shooting, the thought crossed my mind that perhaps Almusa might be .......

Accused Boulder supermarket gunman Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa is a "loner" who lives in his family’s basement and never had a girlfriend, according to a relative.

Usame Almusa, Alissa’s brother-in-law, told The Sun that the alleged shooter lived in the basement of his family’s Arvada, Colorado, home and never had many friends.

"Every time I visited with my wife’s family he would always sit away from everyone else, not saying anything to anyone," Almusa, who is married to Alissa’s sister, Aicha, told the outlet. "It was strange."

"He was a loner, just sitting to the side, not with us," he said. "He works with his family, his brothers, at their restaurant. There was never a girlfriend and not many friends."

"He has a reputation for being stupid, not smart," Almusa said of his brother-in-law. "He was not like a proper Muslim. I don’t know what kind of Muslim he was. He did not go to the mosque I go to."

.... sounds a little like Aspie traits! Add to this the issues of uncontrollable rage, the issues of delusions and paranoia.

The brother of the suspected Boulder supermarket shooter describes him as "deeply disturbed" and "very anti-social." The shooter's brother, 34-year-old Ali Aliwi Alissa, told newspaper The Daily Beast that his brother is paranoid. In high school, the shooter talked about being chased and that someone was looking for him. The shooter's brother told The Daily Beast, “not at all a political statement, it’s mental illness.”

Untreated mental illness is a very serious problem.

It becomes even more serious when accompanied by access to a semi-automatic rifle.

That's a tragic story on so many levels.

If his family knew he had mental problems, then why did they not intervene?

I don’t understand.
A history of mental/emotional instability, a history of violence, and he is able to legally purchase a gun?
I thought that applying for a gun permit meant someone checked for exactly those things?

If the violent act was committed as an adult and/or resulted in a prison sentence, then a background check should show that and the seller should refuse to sell.  I think in this case, either the violent act was not serious enough to show up on a background check, or the seller screwed up.  As for the mental illness part, if he never received any formal treatment, then his illness would also not show up in the report.

I've heard that it's very hard for families to get mental health care for anyone over the age of majority. One a child is 18 they can refuse treatment and make their own decisions. If this man suffered from paranoia it's unlikely he would consent to treatment. I'm just guessing as I don't know the circumstances, his history, or the laws in Colorado.

It's beyond tragic no matter how you look at it.

I know that I am a mean, horrible, nasty, awful, and evil person for even mentioning this, but there was a time in this country when locked rooms in people's homes were occupied by relatives whom the home-owners did not want to be seen in public.

Does the name "Boo Radley" ring a bell?

I am STILL bewildered by his access to that weapon.
Did he go into a store and buy it?
Acting strange?
The clerk dealing with him,or the store owner has serious responsibility right there.
It is those people‘s jobs, 40 hours a week, to pick up on bad vibes and refuse to sell.
As well as the background check, which obviously failed.
