Don't know if it'll matter much, but I saw on the news how Afghan civilians are taking up arms to fight the Taliban. I'm not saying they stand to win, but at least there are people there who yearn to live in a free society.

In 2016, I've worked in a project for a partner company operating in Kabul; and some of the Afghans explained to me why Taliban maintained some popularity in some areas, I recall one telling me:
"They bring food, fuel and everything from Pakistan, and even hire men for $400 which is a lot here".

Hmm this establishment had Afghani women working there back then, burqa-less, I wonder what a bleak fate waiting for them now.

yes. China is eager to expand its economic sphere of influence into Afghanistan. And China is a long time friend of
the Taliban's friends and neighbors: Pakistan.

So ...as long as the Taliban and Al Quida keep turning a blind eye to ...Chinese oppression of the Musim Uighurs in China's Xinchuan region- they and Beijing might get along. And China might build up the country. But if the two parties have a falling out then...modern China might join us, and also fall into "the graveyard of empires" that is Afghanistan.

It was Mao Tse Tung who coined the term "An enemy of my enemy is my friend"

The Taliban are pashto language based and focused on their war in Afghanistan and don't share Al Qaeda's global agenda. Their focus is south Asia.

Strategically India support the democratically elected government of Afghanistan as the Taliban are linked to Pakistan based islamic terror groups operating in Pakistan and Indian administered Kashmir. Pakistan naturally support the Taliban.

India is naturally China's biggest enemy so China allies itself with Pakistan. Naturally Pakistan's military channels Chinese military aid to the Taliban and it filters down to ilsamic insurgent groups in India itself.

This arrangement works for China. I am not aware of China's support for Al Quaeda but I think they both ignore each other's interests for the moment). They share a common enemy in the west....

Thats pretty much my understanding of it.

Pakistan is our best frenemy in South Asia. Love us, and at the same time back all of the terrorist groups out to destroy us.

The Taliban - Afgan locals who follow an extreme Saudi brand of Islam, were happy to allow Al Queda to use Afghanistan as a base to attack the US. But the Taliban is local focused, while AL Queda is global.

If Al Queda can inspire Muslims in Chechnya to rise up against Russia (and to bomb marathon runners in Boston), then maybe Al Queda could do the same for the Uighurs in China. Causing a fun rift between Al Queda and the Taliban over relations with China. Well..we can only hope.

Interesting question? the Chinese pogrom on the Uighers is strategic, I suspect all this business of locking up the Uighers and putting them all under curfew is they are deliberately keeping them isolated which means they won't have access to Mullahs in Saudi Arabia even via the internet.

Over time the Han will move into areas currently dominated by Uighers and Tibetans and in a process of acculturation and replacement dilute the Uighers and Tibetans to the point where they are effectively absorbed. The French did the same thing to the New Caledonians.

It seems analogous to divorcing a murdering sociopath to marry a suicidal manic-depressive.

I don't know any mentally healthy state right now.

I don't know that Turkey under Erdoğan is worse than the US under Trump.
