All this 'doggy whistle' talk is hurting my brain & ears.
MaxE please explain to LeagueGirl who the dog whistle 'Freedom' is aimed at and why.
OK well in my own words, "dog whistle" means a word or phrase that has a benign if not positive meaning to most people but suggests more to a certain group at which it is targeted.
When I was a child in post-WWII America we were told that Americans and those living in countries allied with America (e.g. Canada) were free and those living in the USSR, the Warsaw Pact, and China weren't. Everyone wanted to be free and felt bad for the poor devils in the Soviet Bloc who weren't.
So once the USSR fell roughly 30 years ago, it became popular to suggest that anyone on the Left or perceived as being on the Left as being against freedom just as the vanquished Soviets were against freedom. So the Right acquired a monopoly on freedom and those opposed to their agenda were anointed the enemies of freedom. For example, the Freedom Caucus in Congress is composed of the most extreme Republicans (extreme as in farthest to the right).
So when a politician emphasizes their love of freedom, it can be seen as a basically positive stance by the average citizen but it signals to a right-wing activist that they are a member of the "club" so to speak. So to me a using #freedom as a hashtag is an example of that sort of signaling.
This may have been a bit wordy. If somebody else things they can explain better please don't let me stop you.
