A government must lead by example. If a government is developing weapons of mass destruction, what right has it to ban an individual from a weapon of lesser destruction?
One must lead by example.
What right does one country have to say to another "You must not develop nuclear weapons" when the country saying it has thousands of the things? They have no right whatsoever to say that to another country unless they first dissarm all their own nuclear weapons so they can't be used. Then they have the rights to say to another that they are not to develop them.

Always lead by example or say nothing. To say something when one oneself is guilty is hypocritical.

So for America. Unless you dissarm your police, how can you ever dissarm your people? Certainly give police protective equipment but guns?

The issue is that either everyone is allowed to carry guns or no one is and if no one is then it should start by example. No one has the right to say to another "You must not do this" unless the one saying it leads by example.

^ The issue is personal gun ownership, and how/if that should be regulated, even just a little bit, to help prevent/reduce these appalling mass shootings.

Police guns are heavily regulated (or I hope so 8O ).
Private guns in USA are not.

That is more about discipline and upbringing than about the weapons themselves as if one wants to kill others there are many ways to do it.
This thread is specifically about banning guns.

This seems to me a good summary of an argument for banning the easy personal ownership of weapons such as the AR-15. Maybe more knowledgeable gun owners would like to, uh, shoot holes in it?

Sure, I'll bite.

I don't own one but I can tell you where you went wrong.

So let's say you have your argumentative part down. What you don't have as a description of the corrective action that you're arguing for.

It'll be somewhat a repetition to what I had already explained in this thread, and like before, to write a law you have to describe the operation of the thing you're trying to ban. To do that you have to understand what an AR-15 is, and exactly what separates it from any other chunk of metal.
I'll save myself the effort of typing on a phone and get into the only bit that matters. It's a gas-operated rifle at it's core, everything else is cosmetic.
Trying to ban gas-operated action would be too restrictive as it covers much of the civilian firearms market, including products that have sporting applications, you won't be able to pass something like that.
So laws end up covering cosmetic features like grips and stocks, outside of the operation of the action, like was done in the 1994 ban. The result was, not much of an impact, as all you end up with are rifles that look different but otherwise work the same.

Since these mass shootings are, as the article indicates, AR-15 driven - why not increase the age of ownership for that weapon, have mandated training, increase background checks, close the gun show loophole, and so on.

Personally I'd like to see a total ban of unregulated, public ownership of that weapon. There are doubtless other weapons of a similar type/nature/capabilities that could also be included but for the purposes of this thread, I'll stay with the AR-15.

Sure - guns for sports use, self defense, hunting etc I can understand (but I think there needs to be a better control of the sheer unlimited proliferation of these things) - but an AR-15? C'mon...

But few guns are quite so efficient at killing several people at once than, say, an AR-15 so let's start with that.

How far do you think these mass killing events would have gone if the shooter was armed instead with a knife, a bow and arrow, a crossbow - or even a "conventional" gun? (sorry, I don't know the terminology - a Glock pistol perhaps?)

You're still not understanding what an AR-15 is. There are hundreds of manufacturers of a clone of that design, each with it's own name.

You're arguing but aren't describing what you're trying to ban.

What I'm saying is, go ahead and try writing an actual law, how would it read, let's see it.

You need to really keep in mind the fact that historically manufacturers modify their product to conform to new laws. Would you be able to write something they can't get around of?

There were hundreds of manufacturers of an "IBM-Compatible PC" back in the day but we had no problem with identifying all of them as "PCs".
They were identifiable as conforming to a basic capability - could the same thing not apply to the AR-15 and their "perform-alikes"?

 You think I'd be in a thread here if I could do that?

The issue is fraught with difficulties - there is clearly no easy "one size fits all" solution - but a reintroduction of the legislation that was let slip and die (Trump? - or earlier?) might be a start.
Some form of regulation seems a popular concept with the majority of Americans (or so I've read).

I'd love to see your attempt at banning the PC then.

I'll take your ban for a challenge, to sell a computer where you have such a ban in effect.

I'm fully qualified to do just that, having an actual Computer Engineering degree, and being a gainfully employed engineer in the industry, and having run a computer hardware business in the past.

Take the PC ban as a mental exercise, maybe you'll understand why gun bans in America are always futile.

Guns are just tools. It is the users that are the problem.
Surprizingly in the history of the human race, apart from Godly acts, the one "Tool" used that has killed more people than any other by far is not a gun and even if one put every single human death by gun together, it only amounts to around three quarters of the death rates the figures that this other tool has claimed... And this other tool is not officially classed as a weapon but has been used as one.

Actually, both statements are false. Also, sometimes it's hard to tell if someone is stating (wrong) facts or just their opinions when not disclosing such.

Police departments buy military surplus equipment. It's not so much regulation, as much as what standard firearms and cartridges police departments adopt. For example police can use expanding ammunition (hollow points), that are banned for international armed conflicts under Geneva convention, meaning in a way their firearms are even less regulated than the military's.

Saying that civilian firearms in US are unregulated is 100% false. Some of the easiest and best examples are the 1934 National Firearms Act which provided classification for types of firearms based on their functional characteristics, and introduced a mandatory licensing requirement based on the classification (assault rifles and machine guns are Title 2 and require federal licensing, a very thorough and rigorous process). The NFA is a really good practical set of laws that remained relevant and effective due to the fact they focus on the functional aspect. The 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban, is a really crappy Clinton-era legislature that focused on patterns of cosmetic features of firearms like stocks and grips rather their actual functional aspects, which as you might imagine proved rather ineffective, in the sense that the manufacturers immediately adapted to the law and to not include the specific sets of cosmetic features.
Here I have provided not only examples of laws regulating firearms in US, but also examples of good ones vs bad.

Facts.

When the constitution allows citizens to arm themselves and local politicians and law enforcement encourage citizens to use their guns then this sort of thing happens. Delivery driver forgets duck sauce and get's his brains blown by irate customer.

The duck sauce was supposed to be a hint for him on what to do. Maybe after a reset he'll remember the sauce and realize he should duck before getting shot.
