This search has cost taxpayers over £12.5 million to date, and there's pressure on the family to have it resolved.
If the parents were to deny a DNA test on someone who has drawn this much attention, people could also say it's proof they know their daughter is dead. That leads back to speculation that they could somehow be involved.
Allowing someone to be tested could potentially find Maddie (first and foremost), but it also shows the McCanns are doing everything they can to bring this expensive search to a close.
