"The BBC has decided not to broadcast an episode of David Attenborough’s flagship new series on British wildlife because of fears its themes of the destruction of nature would risk a backlash from Tory politicians and the rightwing press, the Guardian has been told."
(FYI David Attenborough is a nature presenter and expert who has studied and shown us the natural world for decades, a well trusted and knowledgeable man.)
That is bizarre. An open admission that the BBC is prioritising rightwing feelings over facts about our planet Earth. Now I know for sure that the BBC is not independent anymore.
I can't get my head round how the environment has become political. Nature isn't left or rightwing, it just is.
That claim in that Guardian article that the BBC cancelled a David Attenborough programme through fears of a right-wing backlash is so obviously complete nonsense.
As the article itself admits towards the end, the series that the BBC commissioned from Silverback Films was always only intended to be a five-part series. Two charities then later commissioned Silverback Films to make a separate film, which is now available on BBC iPlayer.
The idea that there would even be much of a right-wing backlash over a documentary about a topic as relatively uncontroversial as rewilding is ridiculous, let alone the idea that the BBC would let fear of such a thing dictate whether or not they decided to show it.
There are lots of conservatives who support rewilding. One of the most prominent supporters of rewilding in the UK is the Tory MP Zac Goldsmith, who is the current Minister of State for Asia, Energy, Climate and Environment. Most other conservatives and right-wingers are probably apathetic about the issue. So where are these right-wing pressure groups the BBC is running in fear from? What are these right-wingers going to do that the BBC is so scared of?
The Guardian desperately wants its readers to believe there's some right-wing boogeyman out there cancelling leftists, so they've taken one anodyne article by the Telegraph (raising questions over the BBC's funding) and some unnamed sources (how convenient) and ran with a story that is complete BS.
Unlike some on the right, I am generally in favour of fighting fire with fire, and getting leftists 'cancelled'. But that's not what's happened here.
Come on, get real.
