DeSantis goes after Furries
No, but last time I checked the map of the sexual predators living in our neighborhood, we were holding steady at about 52. Most of the folks living in our area are good, trustworthy individuals of all races, religions, sexuality, etc... Doesn't mean I'll let my granddaughter of 15 go a wandering without an adult. Kinda like a convention of whatever...
I can't imagine having a parent with me at 15 to trick or treat.
I'm her grandparent, so it's even worse. I don't go everywhere with her. She can go to a movie with friends, sleepovers, etc... Recently, she went with her drama club to a 'lock-in' at Ripley's Believe It Or Not, here in St. Augustine. And there were kids of all races, sexes, sexualities, etc... I trust her drama teacher, I trust her friends, I trust the business owners. The big difference that I see is it was a teenage climate. Our neighborhood is mostly good, but there are some 'iffy' sections and some sections not necessarily child/teenager friendly. There is also a creek where some homeless people have been known to sneak down to, to sleep. I won't walk right beside of her, she's allowed to walk quite a distance in front of me. But, I can see her.
It's not my job to worry about whether or not she's embarrassed by my presence. It's my job to keep her safe to the very best of my ability. She's got 2 years and 3 mos left to put up with me, then she's going to be able to put herself in risky situations all she likes. I hope she doesn't, I hope I've taught her what to watch out for. But my gosh, they are priceless. It's worth any hard feelings that may be caused by my paranoia.

After 9/11 many people were attacked by people with anti-Muslim sentiments, some of those victims were Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, atheists, etc. Did the sentiments behind the attack cease to exist because the target wasn't who the attacker thought it would be?
If they believe they're targeting queer people, it's hard to frame their actions as not being motivated by anti-queer sentiments - and it's fair to conclude they believe they're targeting queer people because the perception of them as queer is common enough for pejoratives like furfag to exist.
Most? I think a great many people don't even know who they are and don't think anything. I had to look them up and they are described as an anthropomorphic group, not a gay group. You have to read further to find out that many members are gay.
I suspect that what matters here is not what MOST people perceive, but what appeals to DeSantis's most fanatical supporters, i.e. the people he counts on as political donors and campaign volunteers. These would likely include quite a few hardcore religious right wingers who have likely been exposed to anti-gay scaremongering against furries.

That picture made me a bit queasy, too. Virtually naked butts right at children’s eye level? And what finger are those young, surely elementary-aged children, holding up? That wasn’t allowed when I was at school - not even in high school.
But worse than that, they are teaching these children to hate, to relish being bullies. That is tragic.

De Santis is yet another MAGA with a prepackaged solution looking for a problem. He is blazing his own trail from Trump but the endgame is the same. He offers white republicans and their allies a glimpse of a "glorious" past which he claims he will take them to like Moses taking the Israelites to the promised land.

right-wingers' current thing is calling everyone they don't like "groomers"
it's funny cuz like, if they keep using that word, eventually it's going to lose its meaning (which is probably the point; right-wingers want the word groomer to lose its meaning, because they're the groomers)
My understanding is the reason Megaplex had to rule out minors is that Desantis's laws accidentally also affect fursuiting due to vague wording

What picture are you referring to? The one in this post by funeralxempire?
You wrote the above in response to a post of mine which did not contain any picture.
Agreed.

Hell yeah brother, conservatives would never expose children to sexual performances.
Where did you get that picture from? Can you post a link to the original source, if you can find it?

Anyways. I feel that going to Megaplex is potentially dangerous now, no thanks to media coverage (and miscoverage) and crazy MAGAheads who have a shotgun and itchy trigger fingers.

A writer for Rolling Stone magazine even went as far as to say the move was proof that the 2024 Republican presidential candidate had 'sucked the pleasure out of many of life's little joys.'
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... -joys.html

'Many have raised concerns about recent changes in Florida legislation,' the group said in a statement.
'After reviewing Florida SB 1438, it has been decided that for legal reasons and protection of our attendees, our venue and the overall convention, Megaplex 2023 attendees must be 18 years of age at the time of registration pickup.'

I don't like this at all because while some furries do engage in lots of adult behaviors, lots of others engage in arts and creativity. Most furry conventions try to be family friendly as far as I am concerned.

I don't recall where I first found it (years ago), I don't even entirely recall what I searched for to find it for this thread.

I'm not familiar with furries in Australia but I am familiar with cosplay conventions. The latter are almost exclusively 18+ not so much by restrictions but because of special interest groups. I am assuming the same applies for kids at furry conventions. It's not like there's a mickey mouse standing guard at the entrance saying "sorry little man, not today". Actually it would be fun to see little kids dressed as furries too.

I have seen a couple kids with fursuits, but generally speaking full body suits are highly discouraged due to how quickly a child would outgrow the garment. Also they take months to make in many cases, so by the time one was finished the kid has little already had a growth spurt.
