Boduognatus a tribal chief of the Nervii and Lobar the Wolf a Captain of mercenary Brabantcons are two Belgians that come to mind. The Belgians in Antiquity and the Middle Ages were pretty Badass.

Then mention must be made of the Belgae king, Ambiorix of the Eburone tribe, who had fought Julius Caesar in the 1st century BC. Even after his people had been defeated by the Romans, and preyed on by their Germanic neighbors, the Sugambri, Ambiorix continued on the fight with guerrilla tactics.

Well a museum's interpretation anyway. The weapons and some equipment are based on period finds at least. I have come accross quite a bit of discussions on the ancestory of the Nervii in general, whether they were originally a Germanic or Celtic tribe. I think even Julius Caeser makes mention of the question and if I remember correctly, the Nervii themselves considered themselves of Germanic origin. Theres a lot of that unsurity all up and down the Rhine for various tribes. Perhaps new DNA research will shed some light on it one day.

Nice to see someone use the correct term 'Guerilla'. Yesterday I read someone on Yahoo writing that the Chechnyans were using Gorilla tactics.

Gorilla tactics - - ha ha!

Great picture. Many historians and archeologists believe that the tribes clustered around both banks of the Rhine in western Germany, Belgium, the southern Netherlands, and northern France were perhaps of a Celto-Germanic admixture. To be sure, many of these peoples inhabited a Celto-Germanic contact zone often referred to as the Nordwestblock. Some academics believe the Nordwestblock may have represented originally a different Indo-European linguistic group perhaps connected to the Veneti of Italy, before becoming Germanized and Celticized. The artifacts for the most part tended to be of the Latene Celtic type, regardless of Celtic or Germanic ethnicity.
