People saying that god gives you kids is a real pet-peeve I have. People make kids, not god.

I completely agree. And it's not too far a leap to get to "God made them, God will provide for them and care for them."

Oh, no! :o

Another crude thought I just had:
What sucks the most is that for all the sex this couple apparently has, they pro'ly only do it missionary-style, with the lights off and flannel jammies on.
Wonder if she even reaches the big O :?: :?: :?:

So that's how they do it. I've only seen two or three of the shows. They must really love kids or else the mother would have had her tubes died a long time ago. They're rich. Pretty soon more of their kids will be off to college so they have less kids to take care of and less food to buy and other stuff such as costing less for haircuts and spending less on new school clothes. But I am sure parents give their adult kids money for new clothes or for things they need when they are in school and don't have a job. That's what parents are for. They help their kids.

They do have a number of investment properties and they claim to owe nothing in the way of debt (ie loans, mortgages, etc.). Their house alone must be worth between 2 and 3 million- pure equity. So I think it would be safe to assume they're wealthy.
As for college, I'm not sure how they plan to handle that. It would not surprise me if the (male) children were expected to pay their own way through college. I'm almost certain the females will be expected to marry and procreate in accordance to their beliefs. And since she (the mother) is only in her early to mid 40s I think we can expect more kids unless her ovaries just up and quit one day.
I also believe she cuts the boys hair and they make much of their own clothing (kinda like the Von Trapps with curtains).
Lastly, these parents have a hearty belief that children, like dogs or horses, are trained. In fact they use that word often in their interviews. Very much like behavior modification through reward or punishment. They have a "prayer closet" (a la Carrie) and spank according to the directions (whatever those are) in the bible.
I am pretty positive that these aren't going to be your typical junior-goes-to-college-and-gets-an-allowance kinda parents. Should be interesting to see what happens.

Just what we need, a family who uses God as an excuse to physically abuse children. I guess one might say the kids should be taken out of the house, but I think they've protected themselves by breeding children out of control, so nobody can take so many children and place them somewhere. "Sorry, mommy doesn't have time for you, cause she wants to have another baby" Talk about selfish brats raising kids.

What's the difference, as long as they're happy with their sex life? Ya, they may not have your positional preferences, but who gives?

Well, there is no evidence of previous or continuing abuse (I don't consider spanking abusive). Much of their homelife is filmed 24-7. certainly TLC film crews would have been alerted to something "fishy" after 4+ years of being televised.
They also rely on the older children (already "trained" in their opinion) to do much of the child rearing. They have what they call "the buddy system". I don't know exactly what that entails but it seems to work for them. They are also home-schooled and do all their worship at home.

Hey, if she's satisified then it's all good.
I'm just sayin' that a woman who adopts a purely subservient (her words, not mine) role to the man might not be in the uh, position to have her "needs" met. Clearly the father isn't going without coital recognition.

Get onto all the people who have endless kids on welfare, then we can talk about this family, who PROVIDES FOR their kids in full. Sheesh, as long as the kids are well taken care of, what business is it of anyone else how many there are? Don't be jealous of or made to feel inadequate compared to her, ladies. To each their own. Want to have less than 18 kids? Go for it. And let those families whose scope is larger have their lives too.

We can't be mind readers. If she says she's fulfilled, that's all we can ever know about it.

I've seen the show and I didn't see any evidence of abuse.

Even if they go against the Bible and don't physically abuse there kids, I could (but won't) debate without end about the mental abuse.

Let's see....

All 18 kids have names beginning with J, even when the spelling had to be forced (I'm thinking of "Jinger" here).

The father's name begins with J, but not the mother's so it's not like they could use the "We're trying to match" argument (I knew a family where the 3 kids' names all started with D because the parents were Dan and Donna).

I'm thinking the father is on some kind of power trip. I don't watch their show because this sort of thing seriously disgusts me, but does he behave like some kind of cult leader?

As for the mother...

*facepalm emoticon goes here*

behold liberal secular humanist tolerance

hey guys it cuts both ways - if you don't want religious fundamentalists to b***h about your lifestyle choices, don't b***h about theirs? k thanks.

this entire thread is sickening in that there hasn't been a word of support or understanding, just crap about how they're ignorant, religiously brainwashed, cultish, abusive, based on the fact that they're christians.

they clearly have the money to do this; more power to them. we need more children. we're headed for a global population catastrophe - the human species is dangerously close to breeding below replacement rate, which is ridiculous in a society that at its best can get 80% of it's newborns to survive to adulthood.

We're headed for a global population catastrophe?

If they love children so much, they could think about taking care of some that already exist. Why not look out for problems that are already here rather than creating new ones?

My mother has 23 uncles and aunts.

She has 6 brothers and sisters.

I have a single sister.

Does it really matter?

Peace.
