The masks are out in force at our local shopping centre.

Those surgical type masks made of paper or cloth are near useless against this kind of virus since the material isn't fine enough to filter our the sub-micron virus nor do those masks form a seal. Useless.

Allegedly N95 rated masks are supposed to work, but I'm skeptical about those too.

As of today there are:

64,437 cases

1,383 deaths

That is out of 7.7 billion people worldwide and 1.435 billion in China.

Masks are supposed to be worn to help people from spreading viruses rather than catching them. When I was at the medical center last year when I had a virus to get my lungs checked they made me wear a mask.

I read today that this virus is quite likely to reach pandemic proportions and its prevalence could be significant for the remainder of this entire year. I also read a projection where the number of infected worldwide could reach 4-5 million or more in that time.

If it mushrooms to that level, no one will want to fly and the global economy and shortages of important goods such as medicines and drugs could be reduced to dangerously scarce levels.

Even in tragedy there can be "silver linings". If this turns into a protracted pandemic, it could force/prompt countries to take measures to boost their autonomy and their self sufficiency.

I ran into an old microbiologist friend of mine who works in a PC3 lab and he wears on of these airborne masks that use micron rated replaceable filters in public

Apparently his workplace has no problem with him exercising his right to protect his health

From what I know is about the same as those who die from influenza in general. Which are the frail elderly, people already in poor health, people with poor immune systems etc.

The death rate has consistently been about 2%.

Let’s see what happens.

Still not one case in NYC.

Yeah no one ever thought of them as s**tholes before Trump. As a matter of fact nothing existed before Trump.

I believe recently a person wanted to wear one of those canister masks on a plane flight and was denied the ability to do so and the person chose not to fly rather than take off the mask. I believe they were denied because of the probability of making other passengers uncomfortable?

Who knows.

The Executive branch, ie the president is charged with making reactive or emergency decisions when necessary to ensure the safety of the citizens of the country.

There are many instances of countries barring entry of non-citizens on the suspicion or confirmation of carrying communicable diseases.

If I suspected or knew conclusively that someone was sick with a communicable disease that had lethal potential, even if slight, they would not be allowed in my house.

Actually I mean't countries that Trump tried to apply travel bans will likely go up

Yes airport workers were denied the right in Sydney airport from wearing similar masks because it would scare disembarking passengers.

According to this old acquaintance (who is being overly paranoid) the virus was manufactured from HIV DNA and spliced with airborne coronavirus to make a deadly biological weapon in a Biosafety level 4 lab.

In future we might see this type of safety equipment as standard (except of course if the bloody things are made in Hubei)
