Frederick Douglass statue vandalized at Rochester park

Quote:
Police are investigating an act of vandalism, after a statue of Frederick Douglass was removed from its base at Maplewood Park during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Police say they found the statue placed over a fence near the gorge, feet from the statue’s original base, pieces of plaster could be seen left in a pile by the fence.

The act of vandalism comes on the 168th anniversary of Douglass’s speech titled, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July.”

The statue was one of 13 placed throughout the city in 2018, and This is the second monument to be vandalized.

Leaders involved in the monuments creation believe that current national focus on race could have played a role in this.

“What comes of this? Is this some type of retaliation because of the national fever over confederate monuments right now? Very disappointing its beyond disappointing,” Carvin Eison, Project director, re-energize the legacy of Frederick Douglass, Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Commemoration.

“I feel to put a monument back here immediately so who ever did this know that we are not going to be deterred from what our objective is and our objectives is to continually celebrate frederick douglass,” said Eison.

Maplewood park was picked for the monument because of the link to the underground railroad.

The monument has since been taken in for repairs-Police say they are investigating the incident.

I assume that was meant to be directed at goldfish21, not me.

Pearl Harbor was a battle lost in a war which was won.

It was a “Pyrrhic defeat,” so to speak. A paradox.

The greatest number of native deaths were due to diseases introduced by Europeans. These Europeans had acquired a partial immunity due to the relationship with their domesticated animals which they have lived in close proximity with for many years. The domesticated animals were actually the source of the germs. The indigenious people had no natural immunity to these diseases.

Are you talking about zoonotic viruses? most of the diseases that reduced the native populations were communicable from European explorers and settlers rather than from stock animals or plant diseases that infected native crops.

Just a thought: Have you considered that many of those complaining about the statues being removed aren't complaing about the removal, but instead about the WAY in which they are being removed?

In most cases, all it would take is for the appropriate coucil to be petitioned for their removal and that council would agree and remove them. However a lot of people are upset about people (often not from the area) coming in and "taking the law into their own hands"\ telling people what to do.

Strangely enough, many people dislike being treated like this.

Lol ya right. I hey just want to see a petition and a council meeting..

Statue gone is statue gone, they’re whining because they either Do like monuments to racism Or don’t like BLM and the thought of racial equality progress.

Otherwise it wouldn’t bother them that someone took out the trash from their city.

Here’s a new spin on the statues thing:

Some loser threatened to start falling totem poles on the Sunshine Coast (I’ve never been there, but it looks like a rather nice place to see.) if statues of colonizers are touched.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british- ... -1.5642953

Total dick move, IMO. The two are not equivalents. I’d be a-okay with the statues being toppled by protestors or removed by government, but falling totem poles? That’s beyond disgraceful.

I don't doubt that many would insist their real issue is the manner, but I'm not sure I would trust those people are being honest. Most people understand that open racism isn't widely tolerated anymore so they just lie about their worst views.

A wooden statue of melania trump was set on fire in her home country on July 4th:

https://www.businessinsider.com/melania ... ire-2020-7

It may have been a political statement, but also possible that someone with taste decided it was too ugly to stay there lol it’s bad - doesn’t look like her bad.
