this reminds me of a quote by author John Steinbeck- "If you're in trouble, or hurt or need -- go to the poor people. They're the only ones that'll help -- the only ones."

Indeed,my ex hopped trains when he was a teen, the poor folk that lived by the tracks would feed you.

that sounds like quite the life experience. I hope no railroad goons were there to make like difficult for him.

You had to watch out for the bulls,he did get shot at once.

those "bulls" were a real-life example of Jay Gould's wanting to hire one part of the working class to kill off the other part.

Nowadays it's the police force, shooting unarmed people on the back. Not that all cops are bad, some are great civil servants. But so many bad eggs who just want to be bullies.

in some places/communities it seems like 90% of them give the other 10% a bad reputation.

For sure, around here I would give a big thumbs up to the State Troopers, all good guys. But when you deal with small town cops it's different.
I would trust my life with a Trooper, but not my local department.

the cops here seem suspicious more than necessary, I remember once not long ago, I was riding in a car with a friend [who happened to be black] and the cop followed us everywhere we went. I've been harassed by cops and told I "looked suspicious." if I was lower-functioning I could very easily have been ventilated by those goons.

it is an obscenity, a thoughtless obscenity. par for the course for Faux News.

No, this is actually the truth.

"Poverty" is a relative term.

Poverty in a first world country means you have a higher standard of living than 2/3s of the world's population.

You are really well-off, except, relative to those that are exceptionally well-off.

oh horses**t. go ahead and spout that faux news rot, it is not fooling me, but it IS insulting my intelligence. :x so you say it is NOT poverty when I can't afford to get my retinal hemorrhage treated? since when is the absence of affordable health care NOT poverty? you live in your own reality and I want no part of it.

Blabby,Were they Troopers or locals?State Police are usually more professional.
Just for everyone, what to do if you get stopped.
Turn off radio, extinguish any cigarette, make eye contact, this is hard for us but look into the corner of their eye,not directly. They can't tell.Be polite, keep hands in plain veiw, have all documents where you can reach them easily.I know it's hard ,but don't fidget.Dont try to engage in small talk, answer the officer simply. If you have a passenger,be sure they know to keep their mouth shut.
It's best to keep the outside of your car clean,no weird bumper stickers, anything that makes you stand out, obey all traffic laws.
But sometimes this won't work if you get an a**hole cop.

I am sorry you can’t afford an iPhone or big screen tv, it’s not like these things are expensive anymore... But it doesn’t change the fact the others on welfare can and do buy these things. Hell in my old city, plenty of them drove around in older Mercedes S430s, Range Rovers, and other unreliable heavily depreciated luxury vehicles with fancy rims... But this wasn’t a discussion about healthcare, hell I am comfortably middle class (well above the poverty line) and been without health insurance when self employed because Obama Care s**t was so damn expensive (I flat out refused to pay the fine so someone else can have something I couldn’t and with creative loopholes, avoided it). We where talking modern poverty comfort levels, health care is another issue and not just a problem for those in poverty (I spend more on insurance premiums annually, then I would if I paid for healthcare out of pocket since I turned 18). Yes, I would argue many Americans in poverty, is more comfortable then my extended family back in our home country (a real 3rd world s**thole). Just because you don’t have something, doesn’t mean the next person doesn’t. Some people in poverty get more welfare then others and some will spend frivolously. Different priorities for some, for you it maybe audio equipment over a fancy phone.

You make a lot of money and still be "in poverty".

Because the poverty calculation uses the "modified adjusted gross income" (which is your income after many deductions).

See: "Income above refers to 'Modified Adjusted Gross income"
https://www.healthcare.gov/glossary/fed ... level-FPL/

Let's take 2017 FPL (Federal poverty limit)
1 person the FLP is $12,060

(I could use dependents to make this look even better, however, let's use the 1 person example)

-traditional IRA deduction .so you can make +6500 ..so 18,650 and still be in poverty
-401k contribution .. so you can make +18500 ...so 37,150 and still be in poverty
-HSA ... so you can make + $3,450 ....so 40,600 and still be in poverty
-personal exemption + 4050 ...so 44,050 and still be in poverty
-standard deduction + $9,350 ...so 53,400 and still be in poverty
-age 65+ extra standard deduction +1550 ....so 54, 950 and still be in poverty
-health care "flex" account +2600 .....so 57,550 and still be in poverty
-over 50 "catch up contribution" +5000 401k ...... so 62,550 and still be in poverty
-capital loss + 3000 .....so 65,550 and still be in poverty

So, an older couple could make $131, 2000 and still be at the poverty level.

The icing on the cake is the poverty calculation does not include the monetary value of welfare benefits even though they raise your standard of living

more demonstrable falsehoods, we all can't be self-employed businessmen, those of us without a high-priced shingle on our wall. it is NOT "different priorities" aka stereo over iPhone. I don't have a fancy stereo either. what I do have was gifted to me by sis and bro. have not been able to afford such otherwise. to repeat these FAKE GOP talking points/propaganda is either thoughtless, or cruel or some combination.. take your pick. and to have the NERVE to even HINT that somebody netting 6 figures is "in poverty" is just cruel mockery of REAL poverty. period.

Actually, he didn't. Dick Durbin lied about that.

I guess my life experiences and those that I witness is nothing but pure falsehood... Oddly, even when I was on EBT (only form of welfare I ever been on) when I was homeless and once again later between jobs. I had an iPhone, giving it was 2-3 models dated. I viewed it as a valuable tool... Again, because you don’t have something doesn’t make it like so for everyone. Guess what, I play on multi million dollar yachts and private airplanes. Most of the time I get paid to do so. Figured you would like another reason to hate me and I’m not even the “evil” 1%. So I too as a commoner, get to enjoy the finer things in life.
