So, if Arthur Shawcross had been executed for murdering two children in 1972 instead of serving 15 years of a 25 year sentence he still would have been able to murder all those prostitutes? That is an interesting theory. This is his story. I believe that if Shawcross had been executed for the first two murders then the 11 murders subsequent to his early Parole for being a model prisoner would not have happened.

Well said! :thumright:

Maybe it is to a hardened criminal. However I strongly suspect that you, (and most aspies) would find prison anything but a luxury.

Society values wealth more than human life. Therefore, is it really surprising that killers get off lightly? Not to me it isn't.

Death penalty? We could do with a good scum clearout.

It didn't sound to me like they intended to kill him, just beat him up, which is manslaughter. Not murder. Some of your thoughtless punitive rage makes some of you sound like medieval peasants.

These guys should be drafted and sent to Afghanistan, though. Get them off the streets until they learn some character or get killed doing something useful.

As for Jesus? He'd probably rip their hearts out and cast them into a fiery pit.

Have you ever been within 20 feet of a Bible? Jesus would still love them and forgive them if they repented.

how on earth is sending them to Afghanistan going to help.. if someone is violent, give them a gun & permission to murder?
no soldier has "character" they are merely an instrument of war, not a true warrior.
these people don't need any more encouragement to commit atrocious acts, they need to learn.

If they go to Afghanistan they will learn what it's like to be in mortal danger which I can tell you will change their perspective on life if they make it out of there.

The military also teaches more than just how to use a gun.

aye, it would change any animals "perspective" to force them into a dangerous situation, but it won't teach them that killing is wrong, but that it's right when their CO "says so"
there are more than enough WMD's in the world to kill all life on the planet several times over, we have no need to turn "men" into murderers too.. indeed we should be doing the exact opposite if we expect to overcome our own self-destructive nature.

Don't you read a f*****g thing? Murder=illegal killing.

They've already committed abhorrent acts. They shouldn't be in prison or Afghanistan, they should be six feet under, wiped out from existence.

They simply can't learn. Why can't people accept the concept of absolute and final punishment?

Seriously, why are you sympathising with them? It's as if you care more about not killing people than justice.

you seem to confuse "justice" with your own angry opinion..
as for sympathy, i personally struggle to sympathise with anyone, much less those who would harm others.
you wrongly assume that these people cannot learn, have you ever even spoken to a murderer, rapist etc? all humans & animals are capable of learning. even you ;)

My guess is that they already feel pretty crappy about what they did, it didn't sound like they intended to kill. I still wouldn't trust them back into society until they it's known they can be trusted even with a gun. They will be taught to follow rules or else (something they obviously lack) and they will not enjoy the process, but they really won't enjoy it if they don't learn it. I doubt this is something that someone without some sort of military experience would fully understand.

What could the military teach anyone? is it really beneficial to be "able to follow orders" unless you have no desire or need to think for yourself? any idiot and many animals can be trained/coerced/conditioned to perform tasks on demand. there is little if any benefit to humanity to be gained from this.

Society would be better off without these people at all, even in prison or labour camps. Labour camps should be for petty and moderate criminals.

Oh f**k, Godwin's law. You have obviously run out of avenues of attack. The first person to mention Hitler/Nazism in a non-historical or related debate loses unless it was really going that way.

How dare you compare murderers and rapists to Jews or any other ethnic group... it really is a silly and immature thing to do.

Of course an argument on a forum isn't going to change your views. Oh how we wish we could change each others' views when they are so antagonistically polarised.

i'm not trying to attack, on the contrary i'm trying very hard to defend..
i'm not comparing anyone to anyone else, simply suggesting that what you said was frighteningly similar to the generalised views of that particular "tyrant"

With these particular people, yes. They obviously have an issue with rules or they wouldn't be running around mugging people. The military is set up as a hierarchal society, their rules are law. Follow the rules follow the law or else.

You realize not everyone in the military is a foot soldier. They also have scientists, doctors, cooks, pilots, etc. It's a good place to find a calling if you have nowhere else to go. My grandfather almost flunked out of medical school before he was drafted for WWII. He ended up as a correspondent for the Harvard medical journal after the war.

But.
