Arizona in the dock
Yeah, he's pretty old, so he'll have to retire soon. What would probably be best is to just wait until he retires, which would probably be if not in these elections, the next one, and that's it. I mean it's not like he's going to be eighty something and still be sheriff like Elizabeth II, who's eighty six and is still queen. I just hope whoever follows him also does a good job like he's done.

These activists actually have more in common with Hitler and even Stalin than Arpaio does. If Arpaio is still sheriff it is because people want him there. After all, isn't he elected? On the other hand, these people who say they are doing everything for the people, well, that's just what the Nazis and Bolsheviks said. The Nazi was the Worker's Party, and the Soviet Union was run by the people. Actually these comittees they have here, remind me of the Soviets. What did they ever do for the people? And who exactly is 'the people'? How do you know what is really best for the people? So many crimes in history have been committed because it is what's best for the people, for the greater good. It all sounds very nice, the people in charge and all that, but that does not work out in reality. Like I said, they say that they want to get rid of the governor, the police, the sheriff, and that it should be the people making the decisions. Then who's going to govern and keep order?
I think the way to really solve it would be for anyone here illegally to go home, and try to solve the problems there, or if they want to come here, come legally as my parents, my brother and I did. It's not fair to us legal immigrants to give the illegals the easy way out, simply granting them residency or citizenship. We waited a long time to get our citizenship.
But it's especially hard for me to take the guy seriously anymore since he's jumped on the idiot birther bandwagon; even going to the extent of lying about having proof that the president's birth certificate is fake.

I think it's all this drama about the whole thing that these activists make. Maybe it makes him angry that they're always always targetting him?
And especially that they call him a Nazi? Or maybe that they paint him as such a monster that he wants to show them that he can be really tough? Or he could just be getting old, I guess.

Certainly for me too it is an obstruction to trusting the judgement and decision-making processes of someone who states 'stuff' like that. I have several neighbors I no longer listen to, due to them yelling about issues like that, usually after their cocktails

Someone like Arpaio might actually stay in offie until he dies or until he can get a suitable replacement elected.
Where someone is born cannot be helped by them. Even the anti illegal immigration activists see getting rid of the anchor babies as being extremely problematic since their citizenship cannot be revoked. There is no racist element to Arpaio's enforcement. He stops suspicious people in known high crime areas, and arrests/detains them if they can't show legal residency or did something illegal. Inside town he arrests/detains people he has the standard probable cause to do so. Being Mexican is not grounds to stop someone. Alien invaders come from all races and nationalities.

I seriously doubt an illegal alien from Austria or Russia are going to get hassled by the sheriff. The legal Latino community feel he has been targeting them for harassment. And I'll say it again, I'm not going to give much credence to a flippin' birther, as that alone reveals his racist attitudes.

Exactly. Whenever the police, or the sherriff arrest someone they have to have probably cause and all that. It's not so simple as people seem to think. They have to follow a procedure. He can't simply decide someone looks like their illegal and simply arrest them. He can't deport them, either. It's the immigration authorities that do. I'm a firm believer in 'el que nada debe, nada teme'. All you have to do is produce the right papers, identification and all that, and you're good. If you've done nothing, you have nothing to fear. Being here illegally is a crime, and if you get caught, obviously, you're going to be deported. Just common sense.
As for Austrians and Russians, do you mean he wouldn't arrest them just because they might have blond hair and blue eyes? Because that's a stereotype. I'm sure there are plenty of people from all places with different hair and eye colors. Maite Perroni has dark hair and eyes, and she's of Italian descent. Both her parents were Italian. Most Spaniards also aren't blond haired and blue eyed just because they're European like some people think. A lot of them have Moorish ancestors, and have black hair and olive skin. Even in the Scandinavian countries way up north, I'm sure a good portion of the population have dark hair and eyes. Marie Fyodorovna did, and she was Danish.

I personally would be offended if I was told I have to prove I belong here.
Having the authorities be able to demand identification papers somehow seems UN-American. Like the kind of societies our ancestors had escaped from in order to come to America.

But if you do belong here, and you can prove it, that's it. If you've done nothing, then you're fine. On the other hand, if you can't, then it's logical that you are handed over to the right authorities. It's just that it seemed people are forcing these kinds of things to happen. If people would only do things right and come here legally, as many other of us have, it wouldn't be such a problem.

We can bemoan, if only... But the fact remains, illegal immigration has always been a problem for the USA. That's the problem with advertising our country as the new "land of milk and honey." But I still think it's sinister for the police to be able to come up and demand proof that you belong here.

I like Flagstaff and Sedona. When I went to Camp Verde it was nice there, too. I think it's mostly the city here. Even when we were still in the desert, there were so many saguaros, it almost seemed as though it were really as alive as any lush rainforest. But I love the mountains up north, especially the reddish ones around Sedona, and I especially love seeing all the greenery and the cool weather in Flagstaff.
That's true. People think that here you're going to get rich overnight sometimes. What they don't know is that while yes, there are many opportunities, it's a lot of work, too. I probably do make more in one day than a lot people in other countries do in a week, but I work hard, too. True, I work indoors, and sitting down and not hard labor, and I like my job, but it's still not fun spending 40 hrs a week in the office. I'd so much rather be spending my time with my pets, and I've always found it difficult to get up early in the mornings. ![]()

I like cool weather and running/hiking. I've been through Flagstaff and thought the air was so cool and dry. I could see the mountains in the distance and just thought it seemed like a nice place for an active lifestyle. No humidity and sweating with plenty of places to walk, jog, climb, etc.
