A Brit on offical business, so you admit to owning the problem.

After being Lord and Protector of India, you left a bit of a mess there too.

I don't understand why they wanted Israel anyway. It's crappy land, in hostile territory. [In fact there were numerous attacks through the 1910's and 1930's on Jewish settlers, not to mention they could be killed for not being muslim in some countries.] All of this could have been avoided, but heaven forbid people read a history book before making a decision like that.

And since some people are talking about occupation...Palestine was a British colony. It was just the least productive British colony. You didn't see the violence like what they have towards Jewish people towards British people.

There's too much racism on each side.

Also, Israel very nearly took them over in the 70's. Look up the October/Yom Kippur War. Surrounding arab countries attacked Israel, and while Israel lost a lot of people on a day when everyone was fasting and off-duty, they wound up in a position to take Egypt's capital. They gave all of the land they'd captured back as part of those peace treaties. At the time, it was either "Don't attack" or "experience roaring rampage of revenge" like the one after that particular war.

If they're still getting "concessions" then yeeeeeeah, that doesn't make me feel any better.

Why did they want that land? Israel was in the historical Jewish homeland, not to mention the holiest sites in Judaism are all located there.

Plus, where else were they going to go? You'll note that pretty much every square inch of land that can be reasonably habitable is already claimed by other countries. Its not like they could just choose to carve any swath of "better" land they might have wanted out of any another country - they had to take what they were given and what alternative was there? A nice settlement in Antartica?

That's a tad harsh, don't you think ???

I hope you and all other people there will be okay.

It is true, Gaza attacks Israeli civilians and that is unacceptable. However, if Israel retaliation becomes more or less the same, there will be no difference between them. As Gandhi said, ''eye for an eye makes the whole world blind''. That was my point.

I think there is an oversimplification here. For example, Turkey has been trying to enter EU for ages, even changing their laws to adapt european lifestyle.

I think its harsh. Colonialism is not a good thing, but overall the Brits were the best of a bad bunch and left a lot of places better than they found them.

I know THAT, but considering the flagrant racism during the holocaust, they would want to avoid it, not throw themselves in the middle of it.

Palestine was a British colony and was reasonably settled. That didn't stop them.

Nope, that goes to the French.

The British screwed up the entire middle east, the US temporarily, and India. South Africa is still screwed up.

Just checked the news and the Israeli army is still standing on the border of Gaza. The USA has sent Hillary Clinton to broker peace. (I could comment, but I decline to.) The word is that if the humanitarian aid to Gaza suddenly stops, and all the phones go down, that's when the Israeli army will attack. Probably at night.

Arguable, Algeria and Vietnam were right stuff ups, the reason Britain perhaps had more is their empire was way bigger. I note the french didn't abolish slavery in Africa till 1905, not very civil if you ask me.

There is a cease fire - at least no more babies and children are being killed by either side at the moment.
Wonderful news, I can keep my Fentanyl patches for now.
I was willing to send them to the Palestinian hospitals to ease some post-surgical suffering.

Palestine was not a British colony, it was a League of Nations Mandate, specifically a Class A Mandate: These were described as places that "... have reached a stage of development where their existence as independent nations can be provisionally recognized subject to the rendering of administrative advice and assistance by a Mandatory until such time as they are able to stand alone. The wishes of these communities must be a principal consideration in the selection of the Mandatory."
