Legally, the actions of the Representatives aligned with the Tea Party cannot be treason. Treason--and indeed, any criminality--cannot attach to privileged activities. Representatives are free to propose measures and vote upon them without any hindrance from the judicial branch of government. Their actions may be stupid, shortsighted and destructive. But that doesn't make them illegal.

The (so-called) Tea Party is not levying war or insurrection against the United States nor is it giving aid and comfort to its enemies. The Tea Party is pushing and advocating a perfectly legal agenda. In fact the Tea Party wants to return to being governed according to the U.S. Constitution which it has not since the days of the New Deal.

By the definition of treason given in the U.S. constitution the Tea Party folks are not committing treason. They are trying to end living in debt.

It's not necessarily what they're proposing that is the problem here, it's how they're trying to force the issue by planning and executing the shutdown and possibly further economic collapse of america. I don't know about you, but I'd rather be able to count on our government to make adult decisions without resorting to nonsense that only effects the rest of us negatively in the process. What they've done is shortsighted, stupid, and completely disregards the needs of the american people, all in favor of their own political agenda. They should be fired.

Oh they sent a message to americans from every state alright, but not that they can get the job done, rather the message they've sent to us is that when it comes right down to it, we're nothing but bargaining chips to them, if they think they can get away with forcing their agenda in such a way, they'll do it without hesitation.

Thanks for the reassurances for the next few months, and when it comes time to do this again, it'll be just as bad, if not worse. These government "officials" can kiss my @ss, which is something they should be doing anyway. The people given you power, the people can taketh away!

As a deal has been struck and passed - be as it may temporarily - and the big losers at the moment seem to be the tea party, I think the best response to give to the TPers would be a quote from Degeneration X: "I've got two words for you - SUCK IT!"

it would be poetic justice if their crazy constituents booted them at the next primary in favor of even more crazies.

The progressives will now try to goad the tea partiers and libertarians into terrorism. Most won't be goaded but a few will because there is no other avenue at this point. A few is all that is needed.

There have been a lot of libertarians here who have written intelligent posts noting that libertarianism does not equal tea party and is not the same as anarchism. True but it is not going to matter because in public eye they are the same. The progressives are going to able to do what they want for the foreseeable future. This is not unusual. American politics seem to have these wild swings every 20 or 30 years, The government is going to bug whomever they want. If it goes to terrorism they will start arresting people for certain views deemed to be seditious. There is nothing to stop them. The progressive world view is that all who are not them are stupid and racist. Arrogant as hell yes. That makes them a hate group yes. The last few years have not exactly given them a reason to change that view to put it mildly.

Getting selfish, tea party elimination of benefits was in the open to see. If autism is seen as seditious or dangerous or our views are viewed as hate speech the benefits and programs will be there but the idea will be to "cure" us by turning us into nice little progressives or segregating us. I sincerely hope the above is the ravings of somebody who has a little to much time in his hands and poor skills at reading motives. But what we have seen in schools on Long Island and South Carolina are indications I do not like.

I don't understand how so many aspies here can be TP and have such hatred for their lower-functioning brethren? how so many aspies can be so cold-bloodedly dog-eat-dog? it's like they don't even get the concept of LOVE. :o

That is a task for the electorate. While we might find their actions foolhardy and even dangerous, it is the collective opinion of the electorate that will ultimately pass judgement on these legislators' actions.

To the extent that a plurality of the electorate is prepared to countenance them, I am forced to ask, "what is it that requires fixing?" If the plurality of those participating in a given election think that foolhardiness is a virtue in their elected representatives, who am I to say that they are wrong?

Mine is only one opinion--and an opinion of a person not permitted to vote in the United States, I might add. So I am compelled to sit back, allow the democratic principles to play out, and live with the consequences.

as a very fortunate Canadian, you don't have to live with the [brunt of the] consequences, but I DO. I say TP are wrong because they, with malice aforethought [just look at some of their confederate-flag-waving yahoos in the news recently] hurt the most vulnerable among my fellow americans. they are the ones ok about letting the uninsured get sick and die [most recently heard in the audience response to a tom Tancredo interview where he was asked what to do about the poor who are uninsured] which doesn't affect you but does affect me.

I wonder if Tancredo and his fan club would be so eager for the poor to just die if the shoe were on the other foot?

there is evidence that TPers even have been known to freeze out their own children if they don't "measure up."
