The course was modified overnight, but those moves didn’t help much: on Tuesday, White jammed his wrist, and Finnish snowboarder Marika Enne crash landed on the final jump, hitting her head.

No Russia's homophobic policies aren't an Olympic sport. But that sort of violent discrimination does in fact reflect badly on not only the host country, but also on the indifference displayed by the countries sending athletes. Had Hitler's Antisemitism been spoken out against by the nations sending their athletes, perhaps that bud could have been nipped early.

In the end I think it was an bad idea of doing the olympic games there. Not because of the country or whatever, if you can do that games in China, you can do them as well in Russia. But as mentioned, there are many crisis actually in russia, and while the russians sure will care for Sotschi being a safe place and that no athletes or visitors get harmed, its quiet reasonable that while the world focus is on russia, that there might be attacks in other places in russia. If that happens, it will be innocent russian civilians dying, only because of that olympic winter games. That may be fine for the russian government, but I think the olypmic comitee itself should care more for doing their games in countries, where there is less chance that the media attraction can cause all sorts of incidents.

The games (in fact the whole country) are run by a homophobic thug with access to unlimited funds and nuclear weapons. What could possibly go wrong???

Construction is expensive when you want to do it all within the country, and the machines do not exist. It took investment, but now the means exists to continue the road building as national employment.

Having a first class resort town, close to Europe, will bring in money.

Russia has improved since the CCCP, but there are still vets wearing medals from WWII, depressed drunks, dying young, and leftover good Communists, that have never thought, and never will, because the State will think for them, they were raised that way, they expect Stalin to return.

It is not an easy place to bring into the modern era.

Those just starting school when the CCCP fell apart, are now staffing the Russian Services. They are young, educated, healthy, and have a future. It will take another ten years for them to move on to government and business jobs, and bring about more change.

They are doing a better job of it than Americas Brownfields of Detroit, Buffalo, bankrupt cities in California.
