Also, note that all the really deadly single shooter events in the US have targeted disarmed populations, e.g. students, theaters with no guns policies, unarmed military members, office workers, etc. Think that's a coincidence.

The theater shooter targeted a Batman film because he thought he was the Joker. The Sandy Hook shooter targeted the school he went to because it was the school he went to and where his mother worked. The Giffords shooter targeted a mall because Giffords was there.

There have also been two significant shooters in the last five years who have targeted military installations. So, no, I don't think that these guys were thinking, "I'll look for a 'no guns zone to shoot up."

That's not what Dox was implying. He was suggesting that mass shooters that do "well" are all in places in which there are rules against people carrying weapons. That includes both the Ft. Hood shooting and the Navy Yard shooting. No one on a US military installation aside from MPs are allowed to carry firearms on their person.

I can't think of a reasonable carry gun that is *literally* smaller than a cell phone - so I'm gonna assume you're talking about a pocket carry gun generally.

Or, you could just not worry about it because you're literally more likely to be struck by lightening, and carry a gun for protecting yourself from more common forms of violence, a purpose for which it's extremely well suited, and if you should happen to be in the worst place at the worst time, at least you have more of a chance than someone who is not armed. :? I'd carry a sword before I carried a gun; I'd have more control over the degree of injury inflicted on my assailant with the former.

Keltec P3AT, it's a little thicker, but it's shorter and not as wide as my Nokia Lumia 920. Depending on what I'm doing and wearing I might carry a larger primary, 1911 in .45, 3" Combat Magnum, Tangfoglio 10mm, etc, but no matter what that .380 is always in my back pocket. I trained myself years ago to keep my wallet in my left back pocket, so if someone demands that I produce it, I can s l o w l y reach back with my (dominant) right hand and give them a little more than they were expecting. I also have the type of pocket holster that prints like a wallet, so it's extremely discrete.

I can get behind this. Not only would people think you're insane and generally not provoke you, but you'd look so much cooler doing it.

Downside is you'd get hassled by the cops quite a lot more.

Interesting idea. I may have to amend my attitude toward .380 pocket pistols.

1) Slower and more cumbersome to bring into action than a handgun
2) Very limited range. Most defensive shootings take place at very close range but many of them won't be that close
3) Easier for an assailant to disarm you
4) Poor defense against a handgun
5) You'd look like an idiot

According to the oppinion, that the more people that run around with weapons, the more security there is in public: Afghanistan/Somalia... should be wonderful places to travel.

To be fair, no more like an idiot than the people who OC assault rifles just because they can.

Where did you see someone OC'ing an assault rifle?
Even if they did, it's still a more sensible weapon than a sword.

True. But if we're talking about someone shooting from a distance, that's where the body armor that Dox and I were talking about comes in.

close range: depends on who's faster. Distance, see 'body armor,' above.

5) You'd look like an idiot

true.
Just out of curiosity, though, when guys show up to Obama events or to Starbucks with a large open-carry weapon strapped to their thigh or an even larger one to their back or in their arms, 'purrtectin' thur first amendment rights,' do you think that they look "cool"?

Also, S-JC is right about being hassled by the cops, but I imagine that walking around with one of those "scary-looking" "assault rifles" leads to a little bit of hassling too.

You know what? Swords aren't actually a bad idea as a self-defence weapon for women who aren't accustomed to guns. They can control distance a lot more easily with it than with let's say a bat and it's not as easy to disarm.

It does - undoubtedly. But open-carrying a handgun usually doesn't (at least, not where I live). People tend to assume you're either an off-duty cop, or (shockingly often) they don't notice at all. It's a somewhat sad commentary of humanity as a whole.

There are entire groups dedicated to organizing open rifle carry walks and such. I get the point in theory, but in practice it just seems like they're deliberately trying to cause a scene. Youtube has plenty of videos of OC rifle walks that get harassed by cops.
