they also got a lot more micronutrients back in those days, the soils had not yet become depleted of vital minerals. and at a lot less sugar and a lot less in general. no hormones in the water messing up metabolism. it was much easier to be skinny back then.

So true.They did use some chemicals,he bemoaned the fact he couldn't get arsenic anymore to kill the potato bugs.
I have no idea what he was exposed to in WWI in France,he was so tough I doubt mustard gas would have harmed him.He had a veggie garden till the year before he died.He had some stomach problems and was afraid to see the doc,it turned out to be a non cancerous cyst that ruptured and that's what killed him.If he had went in early and had it removed I don't doubt he would still be around growing tomatoes.He always drank gallons of tea,hot and cold.Tols stories of coming to Arkansas from Missouri in a covered wagon.I don't think he was sick a day till he died,maybe that was the secret,avoid doctors.lol

i wonder if the tea with all its antioxidants is what kept him going?

I also wonder about that,he preferred it over coffee.

I suspect that if he guzzled the coffee he'd still have made it as far, good protective genes are most of it.
