There wasn’t the intellectual rigor of the history of today....but there are plenty of instances where people spoke about the excesses (cruelty, sex) of kings during ancient and medieval times. Many times, it was in chronologies like the Anglo-Saxon chronicle.

The particular philosophy might not be alluded to—but the actions of these kings were—and they reflected that philosophy. It was taken for granted by some of these kings.
