There are people who are atheists, yet who decry Islamophobes and anti-Semites.

I am an atheist, and I don’t particularly care for either Islamophobes or anti-Semites.

You have elements of Islam which do seek to destroy the “Western” lifestyle, but most Muslims are regular folks who want to pray to Allah, to be left alone, and who do not object to people in other religions.

Then you have certain fanatical Jews who really don’t care for people who are not in their particular sect. But most Jews are not like that, and respect people of other faiths.

People who mock religion as a concept, and mock atheists, are in the same category—and are not worthy of my respect.

To me, modern living is a confusing mess, and I can't see why people would even bother to own an Alexa or Google Home. Then again, to the up-to-date sort of person, my life is a confusing anachronism. We can't sit down and enjoy hearing about the benefits these ways bring if they are shouting me down as an air headed dreamer and I am insisting they are thoughtless wasteful prodigals out of touch with reality.

A lot of people can't share your enjoyment of the 1910s or 1920s if their ancestors were poor, black, gay, feminists, disabled, European migrants etc etc...life was rosy for a small number of aristocrats, merchants and royalty. For the rest it was russian roulette of avoiding war, pestilence and disease. Sorry maybe I am overthinking it but I can't share your nostalgia (plus are you living vicariously through the imagination of dead authors from the turn of the century?).

Take into account the incredible diversity of the human race, and realize that the last forty years are not the age of humane enlightenment they are cracked up to be. Forget enlightenment. Forget theory. Look directly at the other person, ask questions, and let us become really and truly human in our behavior once again.

Yes I am all for travel and discourse with different people. One of the reasons I like talking to people from around the world on forums. However science transcends belief in that people who rely on religious law to determine what they can eat, how often they go to pray, where they can live, what they can wear, whom they can talk to or marry are depriving themselves of personal freedom for no good reason.

I have no problem with belief it pertains to praying to a sky god at nightime with your children or wrapping christmas presents or hunting for easter eggs with your children. A benevolent kind sky god is good, just like the Jedi Force, Griffindor House, Gandolf the White wizard or Gaia. When people are forbidden to eat certain foods, cut their hair, accept blood donations in hospital or forbidden from speaking to people because of their skin colour then religious law is overriding the human rights of that person.

I have still not seen evidence of anyone mocking a religion here though?

There is a time and place for you to shift into "Alt-right" mode but you are going off topic as usual. This thread is about the United Methodist Church and by logic the greater christian movement.

That was an obvious slam to Judaism, Christianity and Islam. And didn't make any since the United Methodist church does not force anyone to do anything. It was that nonsensical non sequitur interjection which caused the thread to start diverging some.

The underlying principle here is if 50% of the United Methodists want to ban same sex marriage then conversely it should be illegal for them to force their children to their belief system. Is that simple enough for you?

Parishioner: "You've been telling us for hundreds of years that GOD says LGBT and same-sex marriage are bad".

Parishioner: "NOW GOD says it's OK"?

So what is me being in Alt-right mode supposed to say about me. Give it straight, don't dance around as usual.

The thread is about a christian church...I mention sky gods and then you were the one jumped in with "What about muslims"....I didn't drag islam or judaism into this thread you did. It seems to be in keeping with your alt-right ideological pattern in keeping silent about anything bad about the right wing but taking the opportunity to attack anything remotely left wing.

You should have worded it as such rather than attacking Abrahamic faiths. As for the ban, the 50% the United Methodist are banning their clergy from performing same-sex marriages. As for it should be illegal forcing their children to their belief system regarding same-sex marriage, once again that includes Jews, Christians and Muslims.

A good enough reason to leave the aforementioned church.

That does not explain what me being in Alt-right mode is supposed to say about me. Considering you have used Alt Right to mean white supremacist and neo-nazi umpteen times over the course of years, what other conclusion am I to come to?

As for the line: "It should also be illegal to force people to believe in sky gods that allowed slavery, hate LGBTQI and keep women as chattel or property" how am I not supposed see that as pertaining to Muslims as well? Especially the last part seeing as how often Muslims get attacked by it being said they keep their women as chattel and property. That's what triggered me and what I found offensive.

We can’t throw people in jail for their religious beliefs except when they result in crimes. I wish we could eliminate childhood indoctrination, especially with potentially harmful and damaging beliefs - like those espoused by churches like the Westboro Baptist Church for example.

We can choose how we want to raise our own kids by breaking any unhealthy religious pattern that might be in the family. I’m using various preventative strategies like interesting evolution books and documentaries as well as philosophical discussions.

I probably don’t need to worry about it that much because he’s a chip off the old block.

I’ve forbidden my parents from letting them push religious stuff directed towards kids on him. In their religion, they actually have an anti-gay cartoon video for kids to watch. I’ve seen it. It’s awful!

As far as putting people in jail for their beliefs, the big question is how extreme those beliefs are. It seems to me that any act that causes significant amount of damage to others are already being punished. A few key points include abortion clinic shootings, getting married to someone way underage, and deprivation of medical treatment for lack of belief in modern medicine.
