Putting aside white southerners nostalgia for the days of antebellum slavery....the governor of Mississippi isn't the sharpest tool in the shed.

Republicans seem to have a knack for voting in incompetent idiots...that he is focused on the confederacy when he should be focusing on saving the lives of his constituents is testimony to the quality of this man.
Oh yes, ALL us white southerners are nostalgic for racism and slavery. And we sit around inbreeding too.

Not withstanding any of that, it's probably worth bearing in mind that OP is a southern who isn't sympathetic to that s**t.

While it's not unfair to say a portion of white southerners are nostalgic for that era, it's not all of them and that nostalgia isn't limited to the south, there's plenty of white supremacists in the US and Canada who wish to reinstate that period and aren't southerners.

I'm only guessing, but Tw1ggy was responding to a slight by mocking the stereotype that he felt he was being judged against.

Neither of you are nostalgic for that era because you're decent people.

Doesn't that count?
It just didn't happen in mother England.

A: Pepe has his chronology backwards here.
B: Nobody in the present day U.S. ever had a British monarch.

Refusing to recognize Elizabeth, second of her name of the House Windsor as your rightful monarch doesn't make her any less your Queen. Image

I'm mostly German, so I have zero connections to the British monarchy.

Thank you, I feel the same about you guys.
Utah has a Dixie area and while I was there I saw folks with the confederate flag plates on the front of their trucks .Mormons with the stars and bars.

I saw the same growing up in Ontario.
In fact, a few men who owned such trucks 20 years ago still might be looking for me.

What I said was they have nostalgia for the era that happens to overlap with slavery (I know it's a small fraction who openly want a return to slavery). It's well established fact that the south reconstructed a false narrative about the antebellum era in order to preserve the "Gone with the Wind" perspective that emphasises southern charm/culture/heritage and swept slavery under the carpet.

The governor is clearly appealing to that sentiment among Southern whites in Mississippi who voted for him. That doesn't mean he's any more/less racist than northerners but that he's not a particularly progressive individual either.

His handling of the coronavirus suggests he is more focussed on the past and not the future.

I don't disagree with that, but this isn't the first time you've made that observation in a way that clearly made other posters you might agree with in other contexts feel they were being included unfairly. If you weren't aware, now you are.

I think southerners have a right to feel nostalgia for their history and culture just like anybody else. It's just a bit tricky when it was such a nasty period for many millions who were shackled.

The Germans done a good job bypassing nostalgia for the years between 1933-1945 but the poor Southerners its more like 400 years,.

While it's fair to say the south as a whole hasn't ever really appeared repentant for that period, it's fair to say Tw1ggy isn't part of that cohort so stomping on his toes every time the topic comes up doesn't really accomplish anything.

Was never aiming this at the OP....my target was the governor who also happens to be the subject of this thread

Somehow I get the feeling most northerners don't actually feel that way. I mean proud of WHAT exactly? The USA is still a young nation. The only thing the south has going for it is having fought on the wrong side of history which is what our 'tourism' heavily focuses on. Oh and of course we have a lot of hick farmers and hunters and homophobic churches everywhere you look. The few of us in the south who do try to be progressive are constantly put down by people just like you who always feel the need to remind us that we're the evil racist half of the country. At least Germany is a much older country and has things to fall back on that have nothing to do with the World Wars everyone hates them for.
