It has been that way for a very long time and is part of our American culture. If you go back 150 years, there were gunfights outside of saloons in the Wild West. Often bystanders were the ones killed, not the ones shooting the guns. This was the case in a gunfight with Wild Bill Hickok in 1870. He shot a bystander to death in a gunfight and was run out of town. Unfortunately, these gunfights became romanticized in books and later movies.
(Pre)Canadians also had guns 150 years ago.
I do wonder if climate has something to do with the difference in gun culture.
Farther North gets colder Winters.. and way back 150 years ago, people didn’t have the level of modern comforts we do now, so people were much more dependent on one another to survive the Winter each year, making for a more cooperative and cohesive society.
Meanwhile down South, things heat up.. and then a bunch of hot heads get all liquored up in the sunshine and start an argument over a woman, poker game, or horse.. out come the guns.
Maybe that’s why cooler heads prevail in Canada?
