You wouldnt name a team "the Autistics" because it would be offensive regardless of the intent. But someone MIGHT want to salute autistic folks anyway.
I disagree. If you are going to pay homage to autistics why limit yourself to one Autistic?
I do not understand what you are asking.
Are you saying that if the NFL named a team "The Anytown USA Autistics" you would be okay with that?
That would be a rather strange name to say the least, even if it were not down right offensive to most folks (autistic, and otherwise).
Seriously...please walk me through what the heck you're talking about.
My point was that you could in theory honor autistics via team names, but it has to be in a more indirect way than just naming a team "the Autistics" (which surely you agree would be an asinine thing to do). And one way would be to name a team after a famous person who was known to be autistic.
If it was done as a homage I would be happy about that. You could name the stadium after a prominent autistic and have plaques and special nights honoring specific autistics. You could have the acceptance symbol on the team uniforms. This way you honor both specific autistics and autistics as a group instead of one person.
