Something everyone should know . . .

U.S. Constitution, Amendment 14, Section 3:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof.  But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

You're veering into non sequitur territory. Let me sum up what I meant: It's a frightening place we find ourselves in. Voting for horrible candidates simply because they took on Trump will only ensure the U.S. will continue to decline.

It will depend on who the alternatives are, won't it?

For the all reasons I would not want Pence as a president, there is one good thing we do now all know about him: when push comes to shove, he will follow the law and constitution. That is one pretty darn important trait to have in a president, especially when more and more members of the GOP are proving they are willing to chuck the law and the constitution in order to stay in the Cult of Trump.

The hope will, of course, be that he won't be the only one in the race we could say that about.

But ... history tells us that all great nations are destined to decline, and it feels like we've watched the US cross over the line in my lifetime. Precisely when it started is hard to pinpoint, it's just wholly evident in the past 4 years that it did.

As long as the alternatives are invested in maintaining the corporate state, it's not going to make any difference in the long run. No good candidates have a chance of making it because the system will not allow them to rise to the top.

I don't believe voting can have any real effect in reversing the course at this point. It's going to take a massive resistance by the people to do that. And the first step is educating ourselves on the mechanics of the system we're dealing with. We're just watching history repeating itself. If we don't learn from it, we're doomed.

We were in decline ling before the last four years. Trump should have been a wake up call. But now we're going to sleep again and feeding the disease that produced him steroids. I have little hope for the future.

It does matter who wins in 2024. We have some chance of staying strong as a nation as long as our constitution and the rule of law survive. If Trump wins and succeeds in his desires to turn us into an autocracy, all that made us good will be lost.

I'm happy with good. I don't care about staying number 1. I would not risk the amazing experiment that has been the USA in the false hope of finding greatness from a narcissist. We can fix the things that ail us most, but not by believing in cult leaders. If our is up as number 1, it's up. That is the way of history. Getting greedy and trying to prolong it, instead of learning what "good" could look like, is deadly.

I agree the decline was happening before the cracks jumped into view, but now that the cracks are fully in view, we can't risk becoming an autocracy. We came so perilously close.

I don't think you understand the gravity of what will happen when the system collapses. It won't be fun. If we continue to vote for politicians who will only serve the ruling elite, it's game over. Having faith in a system thst cannot be reformed from within is a very dangerous mindset.

A very real possibility -- perhaps even a certainty according to some economic experts-- is that the U.S. dollar will be dropped as the world currency. That will likely result in a crippling depression as bad or worse as the one that occurred in the 1930s. That won't be "good" at all.

If we don't stop playing the game we've all been programmed to play, i.e., voting for the lesser of two evils, the future will be very bleak indeed.

I just wanted to add one more thought to my post that occurred to me after the time limit for editing hsd passed. Your concerns about the U.S. becoming an autocracy are valid. However, if continue to enable the plutocracy, then we remain in a state where an autocratic leader, probably worse than Trump, could likely emerge.

Just look at Weimar Germany in the early 1930s and I think you'll see what I'm talking about.

The qualifications for US president don't seem high enough, Apart from being born in the US and over 30, what else is there? So - wealthy but incompetent plutocrats dominate the field. It's a cult based around personality and bank balances, rather than any scientific, diplomatic or other skills, They apart advisors, but they are ones that they know are on their side politically and prepared to compromise their knowledge and training.

So the ugly mug behind the podium calls the shots and has more power than he deserves!

It doesn't matter how qualified a candidate is. The main problem is anyone, qualified or not, has no chance of making it to the top if they're expressing views that are a threat to the ruling elite.

We're lucky that Trump was neither qualified or competent. The next Trump could be both of those things.

^^The more competent and radical the politician, the more dangerous they are. Especially if they're particularly adebt in talking in a populist language that appeals to disenfranchised Americans.

One has to be 35 years of age or older to be President of the United States.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5:

No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

In plain English, the modern-day requirements are:

• At least 35 years of age

• Resided in the United States for at least 14 years

• A natural-born citizen -- A child born to at least on American citizen while overseas is considered a natural-born citizen.

There are no further restrictions, until you get to the 14th Amendment, Section 3:

No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.

In plain English:

• Any Presidential candidate who has sworn to uphold the Constitution, and who have incited or otherwise taken part in an insurrection (or "coup attempt") shall be ineligible for that office.

That's been waved in our country's history, as leaders of the Confederacy ended up in high political office once they had been pardoned.

It's difficult right now. I think most of us feel the time is perilous, that "something" is coming, everyone is on edge, but where the biggest risks are hiding is hard to see and harder to find consensus on. I do take in your thoughts.
