I really don't understand people like that.
Yes, there are a few groups trying to get local people involved, and the tourism that used to happen was generating
money that they welcomed. But... then a few tourists were shot.... and, no more tourists for a while.
There are microprojects, such as this one, http://www.great-apes.com/store/carvings.htm. Others have women making crafts
or planting valuable flowers and plants. But its pretty hard to get people motivated, when most of them are hungry, hopeless, and hateful of the government.
Generally, a lot of people use that arguement- if there are so many people suffering, why bother saving dumb gorillas?
My answer always is, because THEY EXIST. It's not only a population of individuals that will dissapear, it's an ENTIRE SPECIES.
In my opinion that is worse than genocide.
