I’m finding this conversation so interesting but don’t have the mental energy to really contribute my thoughts. I do agree with social media being very much a cause of feelings of social isolation and contributing to depression. Also our modern diets and lack of movement for so many of us, contributing to poor health and mental fitness. Being overloaded and overwhelmed with the amount of information at our fingertips I feel also contributes.

I think in the modern internet age there is also new perspective on the whole eye contact thing.

In the pre-internet/phone age, people made eye contact and it enabled face to face engagement. As a teenager back in the late 1970s and early 1980s I recall plenty of times striking up conversations with strangers who (for the most part) felt compelled to engage.

In 2023 eye contact is much harder to make. People are fixated with their devices. Therefore engaging with strangers is all that much more harder. I can kind of understand as you have to break into somebodies personal space bubble and their virtual thoughts in cyberspace.

I think that modern life is more happier for a lot of people than it has been over the past 100 years. I'm free to live my life however I wish. People were not free to live their lives as they wished in the past. They had to be ladies and gentlemen and if they strayed from the gender binary, they could be locked up in prison or an asylum.

Modern life is not happy at all. People are now afraid of having children because the world is such a mess. And they should be afraid, I'm 49 and I wish my own parents hadn't given birth to me, of all the nearly 5 decades I have been alive this one has been the absolute worst, and it's not going to get better, it's the New Dark Ages and I don't know what I would give for a nuclear bunker or a euthanasia kit, because wishing the world was a better place is not working, humans are evil and stupid.
