Please forgive me and slowmutant for misinterpreting you by your avatar. If I saw you on the street holding a gun I'd be sure to smile and say hello.
Okay, I'll stop being a smart ass. I love wolves. They are so cool. Please sign a petition not to kill them.

There are still people in some parts of this country (although I suspect you will probably find this hard to believe and dispute it), that do rely on game meat to help with survival.
Growing up I know we would have been pretty hard up for meat in the winter if it wasn't for venison taken in the fall.
It would still be pretty dicey for us now, and we are doing better than a lot of families in this area. We would probably cut corners somewhere, but we wouldn't eat as well.
Frankly, I think that if the option to harvest game meat (safely. yes, yes I know it wouldn't be...) were available to people living in urban areas you would see people supplementing with that to help feed their families.
A deer tag costs a minimum of 15.00 in the fall, (different tags can cost more.) You can get a good 50+ lbs of meat off of a mule deer. If you process it yourself that is one heck of a deal.

So how many here are total vegans in that you eat no meat, dairy or even wear leather or any other adornment that comes from animals? Have you read the back of women's beauty products or even soaps? Some still have animal byproducts in them.
If you live in a small town or on a farm you are very aware of how food gets to the supermarket and table. And no I don't consider any of it very pleasant. It just is. & yes I believe these FARM animals should be treated as humanly as possible and the growers ect should be held accountable for any abuses.
Next question is do you live in a rual area? Do you know how many people especially in the bad economic times that we are currently in depend on venison and other meats to feed their families? I don't even have a guess how much money comes in during the hunting season in an area like where I live. Couldn't even calculate how many jobs depend all that goes with hunting. Plus some of the money goes back into the wildlife preservation fund.
I do believe that culling the herd keeps them from starvation, overpopulation and in general makes the surviving animals more healthy. And yes a cautious hunter who respects nature is probably more humane with their rifle then many of the ways animals are killed.
Oh and I love that Indian proverb as I believe that is the way it is suppossed to be.
*Rant over* Basically I just want to remind people this is a very complicated, emotional, financial and tradition subject that should be treated with more respect.
You need facts and figures to sway your conscience. I don't know what to say to you but I guess I shouldn't be surprised seeing the state that the world is in and the lack of caring and compassionate that humans have for one another. When I see a wolf and watch it being shot at from a plane, I just know it's wrong. Blame it on emotion, but I wasn't built to think like a robot. I know they kill animals everyday but I don't think it's an excuse to suppress your own conscience from forming your own opinion as to whether it is wrong or right to kill wolves. Just because we may never reach moral perfection is no excuse for us to not at least try to become better.
A human can rationalize anything if it suits his own best interest.
